Was I nuts spending so much on this car...?

Every review you read about the Scircco they go on about what a bargain it is at just over 20k (Talking about the 2.0TSI) yet, they never mention the fact that add a few must have extras (well not must have's but desirable shall we say...) and you are already looking at around the 25k mark.
In fact, my 2.0 DGS cost me around 27k with all the bits and pieces, so I was just wondering was I nuts spending so much on a car with a base price of 21,770 (for the DSG) ?

I know the bright thing to do from a pure value for money and residuals would have been to just go for a basic one without adding all these extras that I will never get back resale value wise.

Anyway, I know I am not the only nutter here, so just wondering what the rest of you think...

i fear you are not alone, personally i reigned myself in and thankfully some of the toys did not appeal to me, great car that it is it only has 200ps, look on the brightside if you'd bought a tt you'd be paying a lot more, i can imagine residuals will be quite spec dependent I know tts are, i think the vw approach has meant the gt can appeal to more people which is no bad thing tather than loading it up and charging £24K

Meaning the extras will help the residuals, or meaning I will lose out for adding them on?
By the way, Most of the car magazines and market value experts such as Glass recon the Roc will keep its value even better then the TT at around 57%-58%

residual figures are based on the standard gt, options are a personal choice, some may deemed more desirable some functional, i think it wrong to comment on what options i do not consider worth it as they are a matter of personal choice and what the owner needs from the car and of course budget, i know a number of mine were due to practicality issues rather than looking at residuals, the used market will also be one of personal choice with certain used owners wanting certain boxes ticked but will have to pay a premuim for it

I had to spec leather etc and the winter pack, I know if I was going to sell up in the future and I was a potential buyer they are just features I would expect on a car of this value, but you are not alone on how much you have spent!! As long as VW dont flood the market I think the car will hold its value, this all depends on what the other car manafacs bring out to compete

I remember when I ordered my current Gti. A lot of umming and arring - should I shouldn't I . It's a lot of money etc etc. It was the first car I'd ordered new and frankly scared me sh*tless. Be when she finally arrived it was all forgotten. If you have a passion for cars and driving and can still afford to eat and pay the mortgage - Go for it !

I've been thinking about this a lot recently and I feel to get the most out of the car in residuals you have to gets decent extras, built-in Sat Nav I think has to be top of the list, it was the decider when selling my Golf - buyers loved the fact it was built in.

I'm hoping to source a Sat Nav unit for around £700 and fit it myself, so far I haven't needed it and I'm a bit reluctant as I have DAB and that would no longer work with the Sat Nav.

If I was ordering right now, I would max out on everything (leaving the DAB & Xenons) and retro fit Cruise, Sat Nav.

I’m actually really glad in the end I didn’t spend £845 on Xenons, the only thing I want to do to my car now is (maybe) get brighter bulbs, should be able to do that in £45 – saving £800 on the Xenons.

Interestingly VW have fixed a bug with their flash configurator, it wasn't always updating the spec price when you chose the 2.0 engine - price would remain at the 1.4 engine, however during this bug fix they have removed the option to choose Xenons lol

Back to the point, I don't think you are nuts, you would be nuts if you spent that much and can't afford the repayments - Thats the position I'd been in if I had got a similar spec'd 3 Series or Audi A5.

I feel with the Scirocco I got everything I wanted and more at a price I can afford

I have to say that while I wasn’t going to spec Sta-Nav to start with, the car I ended up buying was already on order by the dealer and had it, and I'm happy It did.
It's probably one of the best units out there graphics wise, although I'm not happy about it not having full post-code (just first 4 digits) but I guess I can live with that...
What I would have done without is the CD changer in the armrest, as I would have proffered the MDI.

As for retro fitting Cruise, I did that as the car was originally spec without it, but it didn't save me anything cost wise! Should it have?

Yes the Sat Nav unit is sweet, it was in my original spec before I settled for an unregistered demo that didn't have it but had DAB instead.

My retro Cruise cost me £160 inc VAT, the factory option is listed as £210, so I saved £50.

Apparently the stock lever costs pennies, add £65+VAT per hr VW charge to fit, if your good at negotiating I'm sure £160 can be beat.
PS your car is then road tested, so the testing takes longer than the fitting.

I think they can change that, I'm sure someone would buy the CD changer for Golf's etc, check with your dealer how much the MDI will cost you, if you haven't already done so. It will open the door for you to use USB memory sticks, Hard drives, iPods etc

I have the CD changer built in it (supports MP3's) and honestly I only used it the first day before I got my iPod.

PS the Golf only supported the first half of the Post Code too, once you enter the first half, you could see the streets that come under it, takes what 5 seconds longer to locate the street from the list? I lived with it for 18 months didn't really see that as a negative to be honest.

I got mine from Crewe VW, call 3 different dealers, ask them to give you a price on retro fitting Cruise on the new Scirocco, also contact the Service Centres, they do exact same things as the dealers execpt they don't sell cars and they tend not to rip people off!

Once you get an average and its much cheaper than your dealer go have a word, they may not refund you the diff, but ask them to justify their pricing when other VW dealers are doing it for less.

Even my local dealer when spec'ing my original car said "Don't get Cruise we'll do it here for less!"

The dealers main concern is providing a warranty, however on an unregistered motor when it arrives they can fit it under PDI mode (I think thats what its called), do the testing without affecting the miles and sell you the car with the full VW 3 yr warranty - so I don't see it being a huge headache for your dealer unless you got it retro-fitted after driving it about for a couple of weeks.

Nope, car was fitted with it before delivery.

Back to OP's original question.

Residuals will, as already stated be based on a basic spec, certain options will be deemed as desirable and will therefore make the car easier to sell if fitted. Some options are down to an individuals wants/needs and will not make the car worth any more come resale time, saying that I like most buy the options to suit my individual requirements/wants, and enjoy them while I have the car. So as far as you being nuts for spending so much, of course you are,{only kidding}.

I think we are all nuts for spending that amount of money on car however when you get in it does it put a smile on your face. When you drive does it make you feel better when everyone stops and looks kids point at it does it make you feel special if you can answer yes to this then no you are nuts but its worth it

I reckon, it's your money, do with it as you wish.

Generally life is about trade offs. There are undoubtedly other things you could do with the money you're spending on the car. Better holidays. A home cinema system. Learning to speak Chinese. Laminate flooring. A puppy. Donating money to the labour party. Buying 27,000 items at the pound shop.

If you'd rather spend the money on the car than all the other possible options, you're making the right choice. And you're not nuts.
