Fog/dust/scratched headlight

Post by BradlarH »

Hey, my lights have always seemed dim and i finally got round to having a look, took the whole unit off and can't get to the inside to clean (tried magnet method). I have some osrams coming but am not hopefull they will make much difference.

Somebody suggested it has a bad seal and its moisture related? It looks more like dust or scratches to me, is there any way to remove the plastic and clean/buy replacements?

Appreciate any input , thanks ImageImageImage

personally, i think the clear coat is peeling. The only solution, if it's inside, is to remove the lens out and buff with polisher and reseal the headlight.

Thanks - I wasn't familiar with clear coat before your post. That led me to oxidation videos and restoring methods. If that doesn't work for me I'll buy new

It's a problem of the plastic, inside of it, in some cases is the outside, you can try to polish the outside but i think that will not work.

Were you finally able to solve it or ended up buying new ones?

Mine have been polished on the outside but still look filthy on the inside. Going to try the magnet thing to clean the inside but if thats no good it might have to be some aftermarket replacements.

Same has happened to mine - unsurprising as my car is 11 years old now.

I am going to try to take the front covers off to refurb them and then find a way to reseal.

I bought some cheap knock offs from Ebay to tide me over and the light output has increased dramatically already... might just keep them!

Okay the magnet thing is you get one of those bandy rods with a magnet in the end, wrap it in microfibre then either with out without some cleaner, poke it through the bulb holes and clean inside the glass.

You use another magnet wrapped in microfibre on the outside so that they move together. Still think im going to get some ebay ones in the new year though and wrap them

as i say - cheap knock offs made in Thailand but they fit well and seem well made.

I managed to fix mine. It’s actually on the outside so it can be sanded and refinished. However the oxidation is quite deep so you’ll need to start with 400-500 grit to get down to the oxidation before refinishing the headlight.
