Scirocco 1.4 TSI turbo failure

Hi all,

I purchased a 2010 VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI 160BHP in February after selling my diesel Audi A3. It seemed like a great car at first and a got a decent price for it so I was happy. The mileage was just under 90,000, which is obviously high but it had been serviced yearly and seemed well maintained.

The first issue came after a 7-8 hour drive around Wales and a very fast drive back on the A5. Check engine light and ECU light come on going past Shrewsbury. Take it in for a diagnostic the next day and the clutch was beyond its limit. That cost £1,150.

Unfortunately, the clutch didn't fix the original problem. Engine began to misfire, a couple of coil packs later and that was sorted. That cost £115.

The only issue after that was a slight steering wheel vibration when going above 65mph, it's manageable but still quite annoying. Got new tyres but didn't fix the issue

Drove it to a trusted garage for a service a few weeks ago and the big issues began. Came off the M5 and the engine went into total limp mode when trying to restart again. Check engine light back on.

Managed to drive a few miles back home. Turned it on the next day and check engine light is now permanently on. Took it in to a Deutsche car specialist and he said the turbo has gone. Quoted me £885 for it fitted.

I need some advice on what to do next. I really do like the car during the rare weekends when it's driving well, but so far it's cost me £1,230 + £230 service + potentially £885 for a new turbo. Shall I get it fixed and flog it or shall I just run it into the ground?

Also any ideas about the steering wheel wobble?

Do a cost analysis, how much would it cost for a replacement car vs the cost to date. That is probably something like £15-20k vs £2k and if the parts have been replaced they shouldn't fail for at least a couple of years, hopefully longer.

In terms of the wobble, I would have a tyre alignment and balance check as the first step

Thanks for the response. Ended up taking it in to replace the turbo. They rang up and said it seems to be working but engine still goes into limp mode bizarrely. No fault codes so they're "trying to get to the bottom of it". What a nightmare.

Update:

Garage has replaced the turbo. Apparently a load of the sensors were remapped by previous owner, and there's still an issue with it going limp when turning on for the first time. This garage told me to go back to garage who fitted clutch in Feb.
