Knocking sound, piston slap, chain, paranoid thoughts...

Hi

Normally I'm a lurker on these forums to see what's new.

But since I couldn't find any definitive answer here or on other sources, I think I will need to post to get some help.

I came home just an hour ago with the 1.4 160hp and I noticed a knocking, ticking sound. To me it sounds like it's coming from the side of the timing chain, but I can't pinpoint the sound. The sound began when the engine became warm and is continuing to do so. No loss of power, it drives fine. I don't have a check engine light (yet).

Can anybody help me here? As far as performance it's not bothering anything, it's just a noise hazard and making me paranoid as to what is wrong with it...

I can't go to the garage at this time because this is really my only way of transportation to anywhere. And I don't have a OBDII reader..
I'm a difficult case i know..

Whats the mileage and year of the vehicle. Rod knocks is unlikely unless you've starved it from oil or have a broken oil pump but theres a warning lamp for that. I would say its the chain, again depending on the mileage and year of the vehicle. I wouldnt recommend driving it like that because you never know when its going to give out on you and you'll probably end up causing more damage then its worth

it's a 2009 model, just passed 102k miles this week. I check the oil frequently and do the oil maintenance a little bit before the dash notifies me. It has never been lower than 3/4 to max of the dipstick. So indeed it should be very unlikely

I've started it shortly this morning again to troubleshoot further where the sound is coming from. But it seems to be only there when the engine is almost warm to warmed up. the sound remains at idle but when a little gas is given, the sound goes away until going into certain RPM's. making me feel more like the chain. Can you confirm this can be the case? If so, what would be the estimate cost? I'm not fairly keen on dealing with the chain..

Yeah i agree i would think its the chain too. Iv been searching online to try and find if theres any way of looking at the tensioner without removing the timing case and i dont believe there is. Im going to attempt the job on my scirocco 1.4l 160 2011 as its now reached 99,000 miles and its gotten a bit noisy under the hood for the wrong reasons. Ill be attempting it hopefully next week just waiting on parts. In total parts from auto doc cost me around £145 with alignment tools included n coolant ect. If u were to take it to a garage prices start from £300-700 was my highest quote.

Can you keep me updated on your findings?
I've been talking with some colleagues with a little more automotive experience than me and they would like to do it. but since they only worked on
belts they first want to do some research. To me it doesn't look too different from a belt. But since they need to remove a few things, maybe the research
won't do any bad, haha.

if its anything like the 2.0tsi,,,DO NOT USE IMPACT GUN ON BOTTOM PULLEY BOLT, use a counter hold tool to undo the bottom pulley,,

I thought about that but didnt think the impact gun would of fit. What are the consequences of using a impact gun?
Also parts just came in today will start as soon as the weathers better so probably friday!

it'll be storming (again) here the whole weekend. Or so I've heard.
I'm towing my to a friends house next week so I can work inside. Before buying any parts anything outright we'll inspect what is wrong with it, though.
He's more experienced than me with cars, so anything with the chain will be up to him rather than me

Just finished the timing chain today. Did the job run smoothly? Sort of. Did i get the results i wanted? No. So after getting the timing cover off i realised that my timing chain was barely streched. But i thought now that im here i might as well change it preventative maintenance.[emoji2375] after getting everything back on i started the car back up, surprised surprised iv still got this rattling noise and its probably worse than it was before. I suspect its the water pump as my friend pointed out that the supercharger pulley doesn't move at all in neutral or under load. Not too sure where to go from here because the car just don't sound right. Iv gotta diagnose the problem because i dont want to spend another £145 on a water pump for it then not to be the water pump.

Anyways the timing chain swap is fairly straightforward. You just spend a whole bunch of time removing things out the way to get the timing case off. Once you get access to the chain you will need to remove the exhaust sprocket to put the new chain on. You could do it all in a day 4+ hours if you know what your doing took me around 8 it being my first time.

Maybe it's a good thing that I also wanted to change the waterpump cause I don't really trust the "MAINTENANCE FREE" magnetic clutch between the pulleys
