Misfire Issue on hot days

Post by R3D »

Hey Guys,

Been having issue with my 2008 2.0 TSI GT recently. Drove around 40 miles other day and was hottest day of year. After pulling up in a car park but leaving the car running its started stutter like it was about to cut out and engine management light was flashing on and off. Switched engine off then back on and seem to run fine again. After getting it home I ran fault find on it to reveal it had misfire on cylinder 2 and 4.

Since then it feels like the MPG has gone down although hard to tell for sure. It also stutters gently when idle if its been ran for long and a hot day, not as bad as before mind. Also sometime feels like it skips a beat sometimes when floored and turbo kicks in.

I'm guessing coils or sparks? Injectors and intake manifold have been replaced a few months back so doubt its them.

Any ideas?

Cheers guys

Sounds very much like coilpacks. You could swap the coils on the even cylinders with the odd cylinders and see if the misfire follows the coils or remains on the same cylinders. Personally, I would just replace all 4 coils and spark plugs and take it from there.

Cheers Bob,

Any specialist tools required to pull the coils?

VW do have a tool but they can be removed without using it with a bit of care.

So I got a set of coils and plugs and the cars been fine for days. Even felt more smooth in low end however today I went to drive the car. Started fine then 10 meters down the road the EPC light came on and car dropped into limp mode. Pulled over and restarted in and problem gone now. Any ideas?

Even although the EML has went back off and the car is now running fine, the reason for the EML and going into limp mode should be stored therefore a scan should give you a clue.

I have a 2009 2.0 TSI GT & mine has been doing the same although not on hot days, mine misfires when engine has just started though this isn't all the time. I recently got a diagnostic and it came back with "Intake manifold runner position sensor". Has anyone had this problem occur?

Have a search on the forum as this is a very common issue.

Edit: quick search brought this thread up

Last readout was throttle body but that sorted itself out. Today I had another missfire on 2. Lost power driving home. Problem started when was sat in traffic. Felt very lumpy then when cleared traffic and started to speed up to 70 the warning lights came up and started missfire bad. Checked coil on 2 seemed fine. Turned the key struggled to fire up had to give it a little gas. Turned it off to check codes same thing. Fired it up again and now running like nothing is wrong with it. I've had coils, sparks and intake manifold replaced. I'm thinking injectors? Cant see it being the piston as it would be misfiring all the time?

Do these engines have issues with valves sticking? I'm having second thoughts with it being injectors as have no code for them nor any smell of petrol. This seems to happen when engine is running hot. I've just drove 50miles on cold day and had no issues?
