Please help scirocco 1.4 160 misfiring problem 2011 manual

Post by Drivencrazy »

Hi everyone.

I am writing this as I really need your help. I have searched the forums to find out as much info as I can, but I am still not totally clear on some things...

I have a 2011 manual, 1.4 160 scirocco. It has only done 28 thousand miles. Recently a yellow warning light flashed on the dash so I took it in to the garage. I was informed that the vat is misfiring on cylinder 1. The garage swapped the coils around but the problem persisted.

I took it to another garage for a second opinion and despite the error initially not showing there, the problem persisted.

I have done a fair bit of googling since, and it seems that this engine is known for misfires. What I am having touble pinpointing, is the exact engine and days effected.

I would appreciate any input as I am left with a car I can't drive and no money to replace it. Thanks so much

I would have a compression test done - piston cracking is common on all CAVD engines (2009 to Jan 2012).

Thanks so much for your reply! - yes i have had compression test done - very low on affected cylinder. Swapped coils and plugs, problem remained affected cylinder.

With low compression on the affected cylinder, with this engine there is no doubt the piston will be cracked on the ring lands.
The engine will need to be disassembled and a new piston fitted. To be honest all 4 should be replaced as they are as weak as chocolate.
The latest revision pistons are made by KS instead of Mahle - of which i have not heard of any reported issues.

You may get some good will out of VW if you have had regular servicing with them. Although with the age of the car you might struggle to get anything out of them.

My experience of the car so far is that everything is as weak as chocolate! Such a shame as this was my dream car. Thanks so much for the above information. I will see what is best to do. I need to do something fast as I have no money to get a replacement car and I can't seem it as is. Fun!

Yes i have the same problem with my 2012 1.4 CODE: CAV 118kw/160hp scirocco untill now. its been 4 months since the check engine light popped up, changed the NGK spark plugs, coils, new engine oil, replaced the intake filters, cleaned throttle body, main engine mount, oil filters and the problem yet persisted. :grumpy:

So I went to a local tuner (Unitronic) because those guys are VAG nerds so I gave it a shot.
I told them my problem from A to Z, and they popped the hood, brought some kind of big a$$ OBD and some kind of a oxygen cylinder (looks like it) and run tests under heavy load of the engine.

Cylinder 1,2,3 all good, but 4 there is a problem, they said they need to look at that piston but that would take to disassemble the engine, so without doing so because that would cost me more and I only had $15 which they charged me for their service.

Anyhow, I'm trying to look some aftermarket pistons for my vehicles but sizes differs from one another (eg, 75.5mm to 77mm wide :eyepop: )

any suggestions?

Yall have a nice day :) :) :) :)

You are good with 76.5mm ones if you change them before they crack
