Oil temperature low???
Hi guys,
I have a 2011 Scirocco R (standard) and I always like to keep tabs on oil temp etc. I don't do many miles to work (9 miles there) and the oil temp rarely gets above 82 degrees. I have owned the car for appx 5 months now and its always been the same oil temps. I did an oil change appx 4 weeks ago with Castrol Edge 5W 30, the oil temps have been exactly the same as before the oil change.
Today I drove to Stoke (appx 40 miles) and the oil temperature did not go above 85degs and I was doing a steady 60-70mph most of the way. Is this normal?! I was expecting my cars oil to get hotter than this!
On a side note I drove back home from Stoke in a 67 plate VW Polo 1.4 petrol and oil temps went upto 95degs, again doing a steady 60-70mph.

85 is too low on long trips, my coolant is 87 degrees when on temperature. Oil always hotter.

Re: Oil temperature low???
this is my concern, oil temp does seem a tad low. Coolant gauge is always bang on 90 degs when upto temp.Roy_01 wrote:85 is too low on long trips, my coolant is 87 degrees when on temperature. Oil always hotter.

Re: Oil temperature low???
Coolant temp gauge is "corrected" to display 90 degrees over a range (75 to 105 degrees)LHM wrote:this is my concern, oil temp does seem a tad low. I've got a 170 diesel and my oil temp rarely goes below 90 and is normally somewhere between 92 and 102 depending upon engine load.
I would agree your seems a little low.

Your thermostat needs changing.

Re: Oil temperature low???
I thought Thermostat measured water temp not oil temp? My water temp gauge is bang on correct and gets upto 90 degs after 5-10 mins of normal driving. I drove from Stoke to Manchester today and my OIL temp went upto a maximum of 87 degs, mixture of M6 driving at 50mph (roadworks) and a few blasts beyond that when off the 50mph limit. Average oil temp stayed at appx 83/84 degs.xjay1337 wrote:Your thermostat needs changing.

Re: Oil temperature low???
Yes, but you have an oil / water heat exchanger to cool the oil.
It's too cool. It should be mid 90s.
Exactly the same issue when my stat was icky.
Change it for a genuine one.

Thanks mate. should this log a fault though? I scan my car with VCDS a few times a week and there are no fault codes?xjay1337 wrote:Yes, but you have an oil / water heat exchanger to cool the oil.

Re: Oil temperature low???
Read my comment above regarding the coolant gauge being "corrected" to display 90 degrees over a range (75 to 105 degrees). You can measure the actual real-time coolant temperature using VCDS. A stuck open thermostat won't log a fault.LHM wrote:I thought Thermostat measured water temp not oil temp? Re: Oil temperature low???
cheers. I will give my local vw dealer a call tommorow to get this looked at. Somthing is not right at all. Just drove hard to and from Manchester and the oil temp did not go above 84 degrees.Cuprabob wrote:I can't think of a reason why not.LHM wrote:Guys I appreciate all your comments and help.
