Another 2010 1.4 tsi 160bhp engine fail

Post by georgel99 »

Add my 2010 rocco to the list  Owned for 2 years, bought from VW - approved used etc etc. The dreaded misfire started. Took it to my local independent garage (I trust them). Got a badly damaged piston in one cylinder, decompression in another cylinder, debris in oil pump, lots of carbon build-up. Needs a complete overhaul - rebore, replace all pistons, pumps etc (quote is nearly 4 grand but would be left with a good-as-new engine). Would VW have been any cheaper (doubt it) or have owned up to selling a pup (doubt it)? Who knows.

Just don't ever buy a 2010 model!

I needed to vent

This the same engine that was in the Mk5 Golf, was a lemon in that! Surprised they got the chance to put in the Scirocco.

It was nowhere near as problematic in the Mk5 - there are a few cases of chain failures on the mk5 (far less than mk6 2.0 TSI's) and some burn't valves (primarily from poorly maintained cars in combination with using the wrong fuel).

It is an almost identical engine, but in the Mk5 it wasn't subject to the stricter emission regulations and hence was not run as lean at low loads - making it less likely for to LSPI (low speed pre-iginition) to occur.
Also there is a quality issue with the Mahle pistons that are used in 2009 to Jan 2012 engines, as since they switched to KS pistons there have been no reported failures.
The newer CTHD varient of the twincharger, which is nothing but a CAVD engine with all the fixes it received up until 2012 along with the new KS pistons, is reliable - shame they ended it just as they got it fixed! :shake:

Zanic, yeah, a garage I trust (in Stockport for those in NW) is doing it. Costing an arm and a leg but least of bad options - scrapping it would be throwing away everything.

I didn't go to the dealer fearing the worst for a large job and huge labour charges.
May should have done to try to get VW to pay for it but that fealt like a battle I wouldn't win :(

As long as it feels like a new car when I get it back that will be something I suppose

Question is what pistons are they putting in there?

If you are having a rebore, you really need oversized pistons. If you are going to all this effort, I recommend putting in wosner forged pistons.

I recall several years ago VW did a recall to reprogramme something to do with the engine management. It was free and software relate. I am not sure if this update is related to these misfire issues, but i guess its worth checking now, and ask the dealer about it if there is a missing update.
