It was nowhere near as problematic in the Mk5 - there are a few cases of chain failures on the mk5 (far less than mk6 2.0 TSI's) and some burn't valves (primarily from poorly maintained cars in combination with using the wrong fuel).
It is an almost identical engine, but in the Mk5 it wasn't subject to the stricter emission regulations and hence was not run as lean at low loads - making it less likely for to LSPI (low speed pre-iginition) to occur.
Also there is a quality issue with the Mahle pistons that are used in 2009 to Jan 2012 engines, as since they switched to KS pistons there have been no reported failures.
The newer CTHD varient of the twincharger, which is nothing but a CAVD engine with all the fixes it received up until 2012 along with the new KS pistons, is reliable - shame they ended it just as they got it fixed!
