thats excellent news in a sense, means no messing around with the screen itself, i reckon i could give that a go and replace them! how easy was it to take apart and could you provide some instructions?
also, do you have a picture of the back of the screen where the led would shine through?

i think im going to go for white, just gotta find somewhere to buy some surface mounts

finally, is it possibly to measure the LEDs?

PLCC-2 LED's are what you require by the looks of it.

Dirt cheap.

Yes I thought that too.... the LEDS must be PLCC2.... and these leds are very easy to solder .... just remember to solder them in correct order +-

yeah they are PLCC-2, but thats as far as my knowledge goes. When changing these to white, they should be a match for the intensity of the blues, and shouldnt blow should they? otherwise id need to modify some resistors. if changing to red then id need to but some bigger resistors in

Why do you think you'd need different resistors?

All the specs i've seen show the same rating for each of the colours, so it'd be a direct swap of the LED

1. Remove silver plastic.... I suggest to use this plastic tool... because it is very easy to leave marks on plastic if you use a screwdriver
Image
Image

2.Using a T-15 screw-driver remove those 4 screws
Image

3.Pull RED button to release the mechanism.... and unplug the wires
Image

4.Using a T-10 Screwdriver remove those 12 screws.... TRY to keep the controller ALL the time this way up.... or some button are going to fall down...
Image

5. Then just lift the plastic housing there are 2 clips you have to loosen up.... !!!! ALL the time... FACE UP (like the picture) !!!!
Image

6.Then just lift the board

It is very easy.... the hard part is to remove the LEDS and solder the new ones

I work in electronic servicing and agree it does look straightforward but just remember these days lead free solder is the norm and has a higher melting point than conventional stuff. A temperature controlled iron is probably the way to go if it is lead free.
I'm going to wait until someones done it successfully before I have a go - yes i'm gutless!

Maybe we have to ask VW electronics department about the specifications of the LEDS

well ive ordered the leds, hopefully theyll work and be the correct size etc, but if not they were dirt cheap, hopefully theyll be here tomorrow, but probably wont have a go at fitting till sunday night/monday, as im away this weekend, will let you know how it goes. also can anyone recommend a tool for removing the trim round the radio? ive seen those plastic things but dont have one and wonderd what a safe substitute would be?

I am not really that confident at tinkering with the car, I would prefer to hand a job to someone who has the skill and point them at this thread. Any tips on how to find such a pro or will VW do the work if asked?

i found a list of people who do this sort of thing based around the uk, ill see if i can dig it out. im pretty confident that i can do this myself, and providing mine goes smoothly and i can confirm the leds are correct, then id be happy to do yours if you wanted, but seeing as youre in wigan it would mean a long drive down or sending me your unit!

Probably because they were hosted by Photobucket and recently Photobucket requested users to pay for their hosting service with the consequence for those not paying losing their pictures. It's an issue that has affected pictures hosted by Photobucket on a number of forums
