2.0 TDI weird sound

Post by pkneca »

Hi,

My 2012 2.0tdi 140hp Scirocco sound weard at certain rmp's.

Sometimes there is no noise, sometimes its very loud or quiet, but its allways bellows 2000 rmp's.

Here is the clip I made today.

Sounds like a heat shield or a piece of trim resonating

I was thinking the same, but its always on the same rpm's, if it was heat shield or trim I suppose that I would hear it all the time.

Did anyone else had this kind of problem?

The fact that it always happens at the same rpm proves that it's something resonating as it only occurs at it's resonant frequency.

OK, open the bonnet and use the strut to keep it up. Is the noise gone? If it goes, you need to put a piece of foam or something under the strut when you clip it back down (and put the bonnet down!) My strut vibrated and made that kind of noise, but padding the strut cured it.

If the nose does not go away, then look at the heat shield next.

2.0 TDI weird sound

Hi mate. I had the exact same issue. I was thinking it was something serious but thank god it wasn’t!
I did two things and I’m not sure which one cured it,

1- padded the bonnet strut with black insulation tape.
2- I personally think this was the solution, at either side of the black tray at the bottom of the windscreen, I placed sticky back foam under the edge to stop it touching the body work. You can see the location in the picture. Image

I hope this helps!

Thanks for suggestions. I padded bonnet strut, but no big difference.
I removed engine cover, big difference but still I can hear the sound.

I still need to try your second solution.
