DSG reliability

Post by Rocco354 »

Hello Everyone, suck between what gearbox to get DSG or the manual but im thinking how reliable is the DSG box also how much is it to fix, would like to go with the DSG but if is 1000s to replace then ill rather stick to the manual. Has anyone replaced there dsg box and how much did it set you back.

On the whole the DSG is reliable but if it does fail then it can be expensive to fix. The most common failure on the 6 speed is the Mechatronics Unit which to replace with a new one can be £2k however there are companies that can repair them for a few hundred quid. It's important the DSG oil and filter are replaced at least every 40k miles, which costs around £180 at a dealer.

There have been updates to the 7 speed with revised clutch packs to cure juddering.

As with most things on forums the focus is on the negatives.

The only judder I've experienced in 6 years is for the first 100m on a very cold morning as it warms up - like the first couple of changes can be a bit sticky - but after that there's nothing. Smooth as silk, always. Of course, by driving it wrong you can MAKE it jerky but that'd be user error ;)

Is the DSG oil / filter chain only mileage dependant? Or is it also time dependant.

It's only mileage dependant however for peace of mind I would change it at 4 years old for a lower mileage car.
