Timing chain derailed

Post by matthew.f.young »

Hey,

So i have a 60 plate 2.0 tsi un modified Scirocco withh 102,000 miles on the clock.

On Friday the car sounded really bad when i started it and was idling at 700 rpm and sounded very rough.

I drove it half a mile before the engine warning light came on and then a further half a mile to my local independent garage where they tried to re-start the car and it wouldn't fire up.

They have started to take the engine apart and have diagnosed that the cam chain has derailed and caused the engine to run out of time. So far they have diagnosed the valves being bent and are looking at the pistons next.

As it stands, apparently I need a new engine top which they have estimated at £2k.

What are your thoughts? I am not mechanically minded and as such just wanted to get your thoughts on whether or not this sounds right?

Thanks for your help!

Cheers

Matt

Sounds likely if the chain jumped it can destroy the engine, as the timing goes out of sync then valves hit pistons and bang its gone!

As already said, it's an interference engine so if the timing chain slips, the valves can come into contact with the pistons.

If the pistons are not damaged then a head rebuild will suffice otherwise a new engine is the best option.

I would say £2k sounds very cheap even to fit a reconfirmed / second hand engine.

This is exactly what happened to me two weeks back. My cars a 2009 2.0 tsi, tried to pull away from traffic lights car juddered then stalled and engine warning light came on. Tried to restart and it wouldn't even turn over. Garage has diagnosed the chain slipped, and valves came into contact with the pistons.

I was advised to go for a new or rebuilt engine as there is no way of knowing whether any damage occurred to anything other than just the head.

Found a company to collect my car supply and fit a refurbished engine for just over 2k... Absolutely gutted at the cost, but car goes in tomorrow.

Ahhh sorry to hear. Same happened to me just before Christmas on a 2010 2.0 TSI. It ended up costing me around £3500  for a rebuild (new head, pistons, camshaft). Looks like I might have been overcharged if you can get a replacement engine fitted for 2k :grumpy: Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

It's generally cheaper to just drop a replacement engine in as it's less work.

The replacement will be compression tested and have the ancillaries replaced as a general rule of thumb.

VW parts ain't cheap I've had toyota engines rebuilt with forged rods/pistons/uprated valve train for sub £2.5k...

I'm now paranoid.

Reading this has got me paranoid haha , is this a common fault ? Is there anything you can do to prevent this from happening or is it just down to bad luck

It's a somewhat common problem with earlier 2.0 TSI's.....it's not so much of a problem on the 1.4 TSI, however if you have a manual car, never leave it parked in a forward gear (the chain can slip if the crankshaft is turned in reverse when the engine is not running / start-up).

Here is some info about the fault http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=102001

You can get the chain tensioner replaced with the updated version. Not cheap, but certainly cheaper than replacing or rebuilding your engine.

Well, after a lot of work it woudl appear I need a new engine!

Got quoted around £5k by four seperate garages and £5.5k by VW plus labor!!!

I have now sold the car as is to the original garage for £3k as I couldn't justify spending £5k on a car thats on worth £7k.

Absolutely gutted!

Pff thats bad, really sorry for you. A lot of people on this forum have warned for the problems with the old style chain tensioner. Some people say the problem is overrated but i wouldnt take the risk myself.
Destroyed one rental car in the same way.

Thats really bad. I love the TSI engine but the Inlet manifold issue and the Tensioner issues are a big put off.

At least the TFSI engines didnt have such severe issues

Mate gutted for you. If you've not already sold it check out these guys http://midlandengineering.co.uk/engines/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; they do reconditioned engines for around the 2k mark. Thats what I opted for as I can't afford a new car, and couldn't afford a new engine. So opted for a recon which comes with 12 month warranty.
