Loud humming/vibrating noise

Post by Steve_Doug »

Hi Everyone,

New member here :) Picked up my first 09 candy white 1.4 TSI 160 scirocco yesterday :D I'm in love already, awesome car!

The car was bought used with 52000 km on the clock, runs as smooth as silk, I do have one problem though...

When traveling in 6th gear at around 2500rpm (+-120km/h) there is a rather low frequency humming/vibrating noise that seems to be coming from the front of the car or engine bay. I can feel slight vibrating through the car. The noise isn't noticeable at other speeds, but only at around 120km/h.

Any thoughts as to what it may be? Wheel bearing perhaps?

Thanks in advance :)

It's probably the tyres.

Sciroccos, like all VAG cars based on the same platform, are known for irregular tyre wear on the rear tyres which can result in a drone / humming noise, more pronounced at certain speeds. It's sounds exactly like a worn wheel bearing.

If it's from the front, the tyres may have been previously rotated rear to front to balance out wear and minimise the issue.

Just google VAG and treadstepping or sawtooth wear pattern.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately that didn't seem to be the problem, replaced all four wheels this afternoon and took it for a test drive and the sound was still there... Very disappointing, I'll have to ring VW tomorrow and see if I can take it in.

That's a bummer.

Wheel bearing or CV joint would be my next suggestions.

OK, got my new (new to me) roc a couple of weeks ago

2.0l TSI,
58 plate
56K miles

and I get a droning noise/vibration from mine, more noticeable when on motoway, but at variable speeds

Its intermittent, kind of like a vroom, vroom, vroom, vroom throbbing kind of noise. Fades in and out every 2 secs or so, not particularly loud, but there in the background.

First thought it might be turbo (first car I've had with a turbo, unless you include my MK5 Golf TDI) but now thinking it could be something else....

Tyres or something more serious..?

Cheers

As I said above, rear tyres are the first thing to look at and eliminate.

I had the same low frequency humming/vibrating noise and it was the seal on my off side strut mount that had decade over time. The little ball bearings were basically loose and flying around.

I lowered my car and repaired the seal at the same time...problem solved. Could be similar for you and would suggest the drivers side if it sounds like the engine bay as mine was definitely humming in the passenger foot well. There is a great guide on here for changing lower springs which helped me do it myself.

Hope you get it sorted

Don't know if this helps but I had that type of noice on mine last year took it to vw and they said gearbox bearings lucky warranty covered it, the noice I had you could hear if you press the clutch in and out when driving in 5th and 6th
