Ok first post here, i have owned my rocco for two years now its a 58 plate 2.0 tsi had a few issues intake manifold and sensor issues
Recently had some issues with poor running a slight misfire lumpy idle and a noisey engine on cold start which has been happening now for 5/6months Looking around the forum ive seen reports of issues with the timing chain tensioner. First off how big an issue is the tensioner should i be worried and Secondly what sort of sum am i looking at to repair and replace the tensioner.
Ive been told they are noisy engines anyway so its hard to gauge the issues. VW local dealership denying any knowledge of an issue
Any help much appreciated

Re: 2.0 TSI TIMING CHAIN
The tensioner tends to fail on start-up from cold as the tensioner does not apply the correct pressure (ratchet fails) until the oil pressure activates it. This causes the timing chain to slip and the ECU tries to compensate to keep the engine running and the result is valves and pistons hitting one another. If the tensioner fails then depending how badly the timing chain slips, you could be looking at replacing tensioner, chain, chain guide and possibly the cogs that the chain goes around or at the other extreme a new engine. Just to replace the tensioner is about £350, tensioner, chain, guide and cogs will set you back about £1000 or a replacement engine £6000. In the USA, transmission trains have to be manufacturers warrantied for 5 years so there is a notification out to dealers if this fault occurs. Up to now, UK VW customer services have been making a contribution to the cost of repair as it is a known fault. The tensioner has been redesigned twice since your engine was produced. The VW dealer/workshop manager should know that the tensioner has been redesigned as when ordering replacements there is a note saying old versions should not be fitted but may not have had to deal with the fault. Given the number of engines produced by VW, the fault is not particularly common but potentially very expensive if it happens. Tends to be those who have had the tensioner fail who go on the internet. To get an idea of the contribution/deal from VW, look at this theme on golf Mk6 site: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=262793.0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The manifold is another issue that is known (dates back to Golf Mk 5) and VW customer services, if pressed. will also make a contribution to this cost if taken to a main dealer for repair. If this repair was undertaken by a main dealer they should have made a contribution to costs together with VW customer service to you.
Several places where you can hear the noisy timing chain but not easy to differentiate the noise and injectors: " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: 2.0 TSI TIMING CHAIN
I appreciate your reply some good info on the situation, im not happy with the chain issue so i have taken it to my local indi vag specialist to repair the tensioner at a cost of approx 500 inc vat. Better to get it done before i have a catastrophic engine failure spend 5000 to save 6000 seems a sensible move. I will update the status as soon as i know hopefully all straight forward
Thanks
Thanks

Re: 2.0 TSI TIMING CHAIN
This just happened this week on my Car ( 69,000 Miles )
Absolutely gutted is an understatement. Car was running perfect and was always maintained to the highest standard.
I would advise anyone to undertake the preventative measures to stop this happening and just pay to fit the revised part.
I am now looking at a 7,000Euro Bill to fit a new engine.
Not sure what i am going to / or can do in this situation . I have had the car for about 4 or 5 years , and absolutely love it to pieces.
Putting 7K back into it when it probably isnt worth that much more....not sure what to do.
I have already had the dreaded intake manifold issue and paid for that replacement , but this is on another level.
Any advice?
PS F*ck you VW and your shit parts!
