New owner with strange sounds suggestions?

Post by WoodyRoc »

Hey guys picked up first roc last Friday and loving it. I have a 2.0 GT TDI DSG 170bhp in Viper green. It's been driving great until Wednesday when it started making a weird sound. Just wanted some opinions on what it could be I have taken it to a garage and have suggested it's too much play in the driveshaft that's causing the noise. It sounds like a grinding bearing noise but it only happens from 40mph it's not a constant noise it only happens when it is coasting as soon as I accelerate or remain at a constant the noise goes away. Anyway hoping someone's had something similar and point me in the right direction thanks.

Forgot to add that we thought it may be gearbox related but the car drives fine with no jerking or any problems changing through the gears and pulls like a train

Maybe a outside chance but check the tyres for abnormal wear. Sciroccos are prone to sawtooth / treadstepping, particularly on the rear, which gives a drone / rumble at certain speeds like a wheel bearing on it's way out. Although the abnormal wear occurs on the rear some owners rotate tyres so the noise transfers to the front.

Obviously it's hard to diagnose over the Internet but I'm not aware of any other "common" issues that give the symptom you describe.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah checked the tyres as I noticed that on the forums they are all fine. It's like a rotating kind of noise that slows as the car slows down when freewheeling and stops when it gets into 3rd gear about 30mph or at least isn't noticeable.

Hi guys,

I too have the same strange noise that started about a week ago. Up to 30 mph there is very little noise, however over this speed there is a constant grinding noise. The garage have diagnosed it potentially as a failed gearbox bearing , I am taking it too a DSG specialist next week for a 2nd opinion. How many miles has your car covered and what year? Has anyone else had experience of failed DSG gearbox bearings? Thanks

Mine is a 2011 with 89000 on the clock. I am getting a knocking noise when I pull away from stationary now though not every time, which to me suggests track rod end or cv joint possibly. The garage I bought it from have arranged to collect the car and sort it out so just need to wait till Tuesday when they collect it.

I'm unsure what to suggest regarding the grinding noise but for the above poster with a knocking when pulling off please check the bolts on your N/S engine mount under the battery box. If these are loose then the engine will hit the bulkhead when setting off. Also check the subframe bolts are all tight. And finally, make sure the back gearbox support mounting that fixes onto the subframe is tight and the bushes aren't split.

For the other posters, grinding noise on a DSG TDI is very strange indeed. If it slows down with the speed of the car which has been suggested in the posts then it is something that occours after the transmission. Diff (part of the gearbox on this car), driveshafts and wheel bearings are items to check. Jack up each corner of the car till the wheel is off the floor and check wheel bearings for play and noise. Spin the wheel by hand and listen for roughness. Driveshafts are less likely to be the issue unless they have a support bearing on the longer driveshaft which isn't the case with this car. Noisy CV joints are only really a problem when turning in full lock, not in a straight line.

It turned out to be excess free play on the o/s driveshaft. Changed the driveshaft and fixed all the problems in one.
