I got spanked

Post by CTRnutter »

Was on my way home after an afternoon out and about, anyway was going through the 40 restriction on the M25 when a Corsa VXR and a White Focus ST (with Ring sticker) went past, for funs sake I pulled out behind them, the VXR turned off and it was just the ST left with me sitting behind him, I'm not sure if it was standard or not but it wasnt making all that much noise so I can assume it wasnt, but its hard to guage when the Milltek on mine is kicking out a stink behind me, anyway when the national speed limit sign came up we planted it and off we went it seemed as when I hit 4th (DSG) I started to pull quite strongly but we slowed for some traffic and although the guy in the ST got a jump on me, he just pulled away and even when I caught 4th again there was no chance I was catching up 3-4 cars! So the ST just pulled away!

First time for everything and this is certainly the only time I have been shown the errors of my ways, other than the F50 but I was mucking about when that happened and I obvioulsy knew I would get canned but really wasnt expecting the ST to do what it did  :)

I traded in a year old ST in April for my Scirocco and there is now way on earth I would try and race one, even in stock the ST has much better acceleration.

I had a Dreamscience stratagem and in race+ it raised the ST from the 220bhp up to 280bhp without any additional modifications. The acceleration when you floored it was astounding, it had so much torque in every gear and it pulled like an express train right up till 135 mph and then the acceleration slightly tailed of till it hit 155mph.

My Scirocco is still standard and it feels like a bloody diesel in comparison, and as for the ride and handling, I have never been more disappointed in all my life. I don’t feel any real connection with it, it is so bland and neutral that even when driven at top speed on the Autobahn or round the Nürburgring it still leaves me decidedly cold.

Where as the ST inspired confidence and engaged you at every turn the Scirocco is just soulless.

I don’t think many people realise just what a good car the ST is, there is not a day goes by when I don’t regret making the decision to go for style over substance.

Dont get me wrong, I do understand what you are saying especially on the handling front, but my car is knocking on 260bhp and and almost 290 ft lbs and weights 1271 kg vs the Focus ST's 1437 kg 225 Bhp and 236 ft lbs, I wouldnt hesitate to take on an ST when I look at those figures and by rights the only thing the ST will be looking at is the back of my car, I guess the ST had a little more than what I met the eye.

Either way thought I'd share the story :)

You are looking at your modded car versus a stock ST, I'm not surprised you would leave it for dust.

My standard ST with race+ and no other modifications give me 280hp and 330Ftlb, that would quite easily see you off or at least make it too close to call.

If you then added the additional modifications that you have added and apply similar modifications, you would not stand a chance.

All I'm saying is for myself, my driving style and the high speeds I drive on a regular basis, the ST was a great drivers car that the Scirocco with its skitterish handling and vague feed back will never get close to.

I have a friend with a blue ST who would have been on the M25 early evening Sunday 31st May clockwise in that area. If by chance it's him you met, it's chipped to 320BHP!

we werent exactly racing and never got out of 4th gear, it was a straight road (M25) I was behind him in the same lane not side by side and we only accelerated when the road was clear! I understand the merits of road safety having lost a very close friend of mine, that was caused by a moron not checking his mirrors and pulling onto his car in the outside lane!

I drive my car fast I guess I would have bought the 1.4 and saved myself money if I didnt want too, but there is a time and a place.

So with all due respect are you telling me you never break the speed limit? If my topic offends you then you dont have to read it, but for the have you ever broken a traffic regulation?

I am a moderator on this forum and if have a reasonable explanation I am more than happy to remove the thread entirely! It is not my aim to upset other members, I feel my post was merely a comparison between mine and another brands car! :)

According to the data i managed to find, in gear performance (30-50) / (40-60) / (50-70) figures for a stock Focus ST are about 0.5 second quicker than the 2.0 Roc. So given two stock motors the ST would definately pull away, with the mods you have made i am guessing the ST must have also been tuned.

Interestingly the 2.0 TSI Roc & Golf MKVI GTI are quoted as being slower in gear than the MKV GTI albeit by tenths. Despite both having a slight power advantage and the Roc also having a weight advantage.

I put this down to VW tweaking the Gear ratios on the newer models to reduce Co2 and Fuel Consumption. Does anyone know whether the ratios / boxes are the same?

The better in gear figures from the Focus are down to the larger amount of torque availible and shorter gearing which also equate to the big fuel and tax bills.

I have never raced anyone in my life, I have however driven flat out on unrestricted roads when I deemed the traffic and weather conditions appropriate and do not think it is dangerous in the slightest.

Well, I lose my ST2 in July (Company Car) and the leasing companies are coming in with ridiculous quotes way above my allowance for another ST so i've opted for the Scirocco 2.0TSI GT in Candy white with some toys which I hope i will love.

I know i'll really really miss my ST and that amazing 2.5 5 pot......what an engine, performance and warble from the engine when accelerating, however i'm sure (Hope) i'll be really happy with the Rocc. I've always been a Ford man and always had a bit of a soft spot for VW so here's hoping.....

Thanks guys,

After having an ST which I always thought was let down it's looks, I decided to go for what I thought was a bit of a head turner and of all the cars I considered the Scirocco in my view was the most stylish.

I also liked the fact that there are very few of them on the roads unlike the focus which was ten a penny.

I buy my cars from a dealer in the UK so did not have a chance of a test drive, but seeing as I will only have it for a year I thought why not.
