Which scirocco to buy?

Hi, i just joined this forum as im currently looking for a scirocco. I have wanted one for a while and just about able to afford one. I wanted to know which engine would be best to buy. Ive read about problems with the 1.4tsi engines as i have owned a 1.4tsi ibiza bocanegra and that was a nightmare with problems such as misfiring and excessive oil use. Does the scirocco have the same problems?

1.4 tsi 160bhp early editions have misfire issues and early dsg clutch packs have issues 7 speed dry box. I suppose it's like anything though, if u search u will only ever hear the negative as people who r driving their cars and enjoying everything working fine aren't likely to post up on a forum to say everything is working fine. Scirocco is a lovely car, may be best to state if ur looking at petrol or diesel and then someone who has this engine can vouch for performance etc?

Preferably petrol with DSG gearbox, but if the dsg have problems i will go for manual as max i have to spend is 10k

Dsg is good I love my dsg box - especially for sitting in traffic etc so much easier. Just some earlier 7 speed dry boxes had issues with clutch pack. Anything past 2012 should be fine tho or the 6 speed wet box I think is fine. I love my 1.4tsi 160 the engine is so responsive and has the power there is u want to give it the beans. But the early editions are known to be temperamental - the 2.0tsi seems very popular. I'm sure the guys on here will chip in with some advice. I like the 1.4tsi, there is a 122bhp version too that is also quite good, not sure if they did it in dsg or how quick it will be. Other may know better.

Unfortunately won't be able to afford anything 2012 onwards. With this in mind would you recommend manual? Leaning towards the 2.0 tsi by the sounds of it. After something quick so not sure the 122bhp 1.4 would be enough. Be good to hear other people's opinions. Thanks

If you buy a 160 on anything less than a 2012 plate you run the significant risk of encountering engine problems.

If you buy a 160 dsg on anything less than a 2012 plate and which hasn't had the 2013 upgraded clutch pack then you will encounter clutch problems.

It's worth understanding the vocal minority rule - as stated above you only hear of the worst cases on the internet.

Fact of the matter is, VW sell millions of engines world wide and they are (...ignoring recent silly emissions gaff) a very reputable company. If ALL of their 1.4 TSI engines blew up because of the piston issue there would be mass recalls and the engines redesigned. Instead, we have hundreds of thousands, if not millions, on 1.4 TSI's ticking over just swimmingly in Golfs, Roccos, Skodas, etc.

Just buy what car you want to buy - you can minimize risk by doing research but if you're looking at a 2010 ish vehicle and it's still running fine in 2016 it'll probably last forever.

I own a 2.0 TSI with DSG. It's great. My GF owns a Golf 1.4 TSI and that's also fairly nippy, but personally I find it lacking a touch, Power drops in the rev range a bit too early.

I've driven the TDI140 manual and now the TDI177 manual, they both drove perfectly so as Plyphon says, just buy whatever car you want

Generally you may be right. But it is simply fact that if you have a dry box sp7 dsg (not the wet box 6sp dsg) that has not had the 2013 clutch upgrade, you WILL run into issues. Politely, if you've not owned car with a dry box dsg then I don't think you're best placed to offer advice.

Admittedly, it's less certain that you'll run into engine issues on earlier models, but even then it would take you a couple of days to read all of the treads on the internet concerning issues with the 160 unit (across the VW group range).
