Car going back.. i think

Post by Jacko5 »

I bought 2009 1.4tsi 4 weeks ago.
Look on this forum and this website and it has filled me with fear :(
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/ ... tm?t=95765" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I really like the Scirocco but i only do 3000 miles a year so i think a diesel is not needed.
I have a budget of 10k what Scirocco should i get without fear of the engine going bang.
I noticed that when it was cold weather the engine sounded like a diesel on start up .. not so now its a bit warmer, what is that noise ?
Timing chain or something else ?
I only have until this Saturday to exchange the car for cash or a different Scirocco with the 30day exchange scheme.. all there stock is much more expensive.
I bought the Scirocco from Das Auto dealer with 2 year warranty.
Would i be right in saying a diesel Scirocco would be bad for a very short journey to work and a bit of weekend driving ?
Really feel like i am a cliff edge with the 1.4 tsi.
Love the Scirocco and really want another :)
Thanks for any replies.

Difficult situation to be in, and I feel for you - it's typical of the kind of situation I tend to find myself in!

I have no wish to compound your situation but the fact is there would be a significant risk to the pocket in owning this car. But that's what is - a significant risk - rather than a definite outcome.

The Das Auto warranties are usually for a year, not two. Two possible options here. Firstly, you can take the car and over the period look to either px for a suitable alternative when one comes in, or move the car on privately or sell to WBAC etc. Obviously not a terribly attractive option since you'll take a hit on the car either way; but it would give you some leeway (especially if selling the car privately) when haggling, since you'll struggle to do this on the 30 day exchange policy (being 'locked-in’).

Second, plan on keeping the car but taking out VW extended warranty. If you buy on Das Auto and have extended VW warranty, you’ll be in a better position should the car fail disastrously than if the car hadn't come through an approved dealer and had alternative form of warranty. However, there will limits to the warranty coverage on a car of that age, so I would give VW Customer Services a ring to find out what the likely cost would be and what sorts of scenarios would be covered.

I have to be honest, I would feel uneasy about either of the above two options. Does the 30 day exchange policy allow you to return the car and delay purchase until suitable alternative stock has arrived? If it does, I would strongly recommend you sit back and take your time.

And have you looked at what on offer across the entire dealership?

I'll leave it to the expertise of others to advise on the diesel scenario but it would seem like a good option to consider, even with the distances you cover.

If you do end up taking the car then you should look to minimise the risk by treating it nicely (always warm up the car before having fun, don’t rag it, don’t map it etc).

Edit: I've just seen that financed cars come with 2 years Das Auto? In which case, the question is what is arguably covered under the warranty, as per options above.

Just had my engine rebuilt due to cracked piston - £2400 is a decent hit to the pocket. That said it didn't affect all of the cars maybe get it in writing that if this common issue occurs VW warranty will cover everything (which it should) or pocket your money and wait for the next one to come in stock that u like. I love my car - think there are chances of any car getting issues, even the 2.0tsi has its own common issues. With the VW warranty ur in the best position for them to deal I'd say if anything did happen. Flip a coin?

Definitely don't get a diesel if you only do 3k miles a year. You'll have an equally expensive repair job when your DPF inevitably fails.

Diesels are for long journeys and lots of miles, not pottering around to the shop and back.

Many thanks for your replies.
I am taking the car back Saturday morning 6am to get there about 9 to 10 am.
Long trip 210miles and the Megabus home .. arrive home Saturday night 9pm.
Very long day.. but not as long a day if it went bang one day.
Not sure what car to get next, i like the Scirocco 2.0 TSi but i think they can slip a timing chain i think,
These engines look to be have been badly designed
They got rid of the Honda Civic 2.2 GT 3 door diesel i had that they took in PX, shame it would have tied me over.
I hope they pay me the PX money they allowed on the Scirocco :eyepop:

To be honest every car and every engine have their common issues which tend to exasperated on forums and the Internet. I'm pretty sure the 2 year warranty would have covered any potential issues you may have had but if you're not happy and have concerns then you're probably best returning the car, as you've decided.

Agree with cuprabob generally only hear the bad on Internet as if ur car is running right why publicise it, I'd just clarify the warranty make sure it's covered if anything does happen - I love my car and this engine is beautiful when working. Guess I got unlucky, but cuprabob is right that every car has its own issues you'll never buy a car again if u research issues on anything u buy. Sometimes u just have to take a punt, or not.

Whilst I agree with Cuprabob in the round, there is no hiding the fact that the 1.4 160 is right up there with the cars that have known issues. But, as we've all said - there's risk in buying any used car, and you could be fine. You also have to wonder how many of the issues with the 160 have come to light through by the way they were looked after (though most certainly doesn't always appear to be the case). I think your car is a low mileage vehicle? If so, the chances are that it's had an okay life.

As Greg has said, before you decide, at least find out what that warranty covers - and get any assurances in writing.

It really is a difficult thing to provide advice on, outside of simply looking at your options.

Once again thanks guys.
Its going back.
If i kept it and something went wrong i would never forgive myself.
It has only done 29k and 1 lady owner but on start up in the morning it sounds like a diesel for a few seconds, thats worrying alone.
All the petrol cars i have owned never sounded like that on start up.
Not sure what car to get as a replacement, why did i sell my Peugeot 406 Coupe 2.2 petrol with LPG conversion .. it was old but a nice car.

It gets better.
I have had an email from VW where i bought the car.
They say if i take the Scirocco back i only get the 7k cash i paid and lose all the 3.5k they gave me for the taken Honda Civic in PX.
The Honda is no longer with them as its been disposed of.
I think they should keep your PX for 30 days, just in case you take the car back.
Looks like a trip to the solicitors is in order.

Ignore my last post.
It will be a 10.5k credit note.
I think i can only spend it at that branch though, 210 miles from me.

If it's a credit note for the dealer then that's ok, just keep an eye on stock as they can get cars in from other dealers. 10.5k should buy u a decent motor.

To be honest it's a feature of VAG petrol engines, that they sound agricultural on start up.

Is it just the 1.4s that have this issue.

Worth looking for a 2.0 if you're not wanting a TDI?

Just had an email saying when i take the car back if they have no suitable cars for exchange i am stuck with the Scirocco 1.4 tsi
and i will have to drive back home, nice as its 210 miles from me so a potential 420 mile round trip for nothing.
I know for a fact they have no suitable exchanges, i have checked there stock.
Not sure of my rights with this so may have look into this further legal wise.

Early 2.0 TSI have the same problems of chain stretch (revised chain TPI note), chain tensioner failure (revised 3 times) and cam pressure valve issues (revised valve design). Pity VW do not do more testing on products rather than let the customer pay for faulty design.

I thought it was a credit note.
I misread the email.
Looks like all they are interested in is getting me to buy a higher price car as they dont have anything in my price bracket.
They love taking your money.
The dealer i bought from is Das Autos Blade in Gloucester, just a word of warning.

Worst case can u take a lower or same price car with the same 30 day guarantee and then u have 30 days more for them to replenish their stock. ?
