Halfords or vw?
Going to take my scirocco for a full service in a couple weeks,
Halfords do it for £150 and vw do it for near £400 i think it was.
Whats the difference what would you pick?

Halfords? I wouldn't trust them fitting a headlight bulb, never mid giving them a whole car to play with.
Re: Halfords or vw?
VW offer service packs that give you 2 services (minor and major) for 413 (or pay monthly at no additional cost)
http://www.vwfsaftersales.co.uk/ourplan ... 2F0%7C0%2F" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Used to throw in 2 free MOTs but they appear to have taken that away.
From the Halfords site, servicing costs for a Scirocco are 149 and 215 for minor and major services, respectively. So buying a VW plan (monthly, if on a budget) would appear to be the way to go. Service plans can be transferred with the car for a small fee.
EDIT: Just read further than it appears that the packs are limited to cars up to four years old at the end of the plan? Can't remember this being the case before? Suggest give VW customer care a ring to find out what's on offer.

Re: Halfords or vw?
Halfords would also be using the cheapest parts and all of which a not oem parts I guess.
Vw obviously would be all oem parts.

Yeah, I looked at a service pack for my car, but it does seem to limit it to cars <=4 years old. That's a shame really, and I figured that's why they dont offer me a service pack anymore.moulin12 wrote:VW offer service packs that give you 2 services (minor and major) for 413 (or pay monthly at no additional cost)

Arnold Clark (VW) also offer a service plan for older cars. It has been re branded but unsure how good/bad the service would be

Re: Halfords or vw?
I would never use Halfords either. Took it to their garage for 2 front tyres. They took most of the paint off my alloy and then tried to blame the garage that did the alloy refurb, saying they hadn't done a good job! Even though I had had tyre changes in 2 other garages previous with no issues. When I expressed my dissatisfaction to them via the survey they sent me, they didn't even have the decency to respond even after asking me if I would like to be contacted. Never again would I trust them with my car.

Re: Halfords or vw?
Its beyond me how anyone can even consider Halfords for a service! If you're looking to save some money on the service, best option would be to find a good independent mechanic... probably do a better job than VW as well

Good call (especially if you weren't after a VW stamp).TheHungryHipo wrote:Its beyond me how anyone can even consider Halfords for a service! If you're looking to save some money on the service, best option would be to find a good independent mechanic... probably do a better job than VW as well
Re: Halfords or vw?
If not VW, I would still prefer an independent garage than halfords, there's just too many horror stories and poor customer service.

Re: Halfords or vw?
A dealer should be able to supply one. If it has been VW serviced then they should be able to look up the service record and either give you a print out or fill in the previous services.Deniz94 wrote:Looks like i need a new service book to i've lost the previous one, will they give me one?

Until a fortnight ago i wasn't even aware Halfords did mot's.
They have a well earned reputation as a company for terrible service and insanely inflated prices, the very thought of anyone deciding to take their car there for an mot is insane to me.

lmao, I took it to Halfords last night to get my low beam bulb changed.Viking wrote:Halfords? I wouldn't trust them fitting a headlight bulb, never mid giving them a whole car to play with.
I got attitude from the girl at the till because when I asked her how much longer a "long life bulb" that costs 4 pounds extra might last, she kept thinking that I was expecting her to look into the future and tell me how much longer the one I buy specifically would last.
Also the guy who fitted it tried to take a bold out, turned it the wrong way then it wouldn't come out. Had the cheek to say it was impossible to say why it wouldn't come out, right after I had just watched him strip the damn thread.

Re: Halfords or vw?
I use halfords for my MOT - but the autocentre i use has a good rep and used to be an independent. I wouldn't let them service my car though, at least an MOT is pretty much a non invasive operation.
I check the car over myself before it goes for an MOT anyway, checking front and rear suspension and usual round of exterior checks. All they end up doing is checking emissions, seat belt operation and light levels.
For service i do it myself at one of the DIY garages who will stamp my book for me so i have a service record from a VAT registered garage, even though i did the work myself with my materials.
The MOT is the only time anyone else gets to touch my car - wish i could do that myself as well!

Re: Halfords or vw?
Why would you even let them change a bulb? It takes literally seconds to change . Turn the holder and the bulb comes out. Replace bulb. Insert holder . Twist and job done.Vishak wrote:lmao, I took it to Halfords last night to get my low beam bulb changed.Viking wrote:Halfords? They wouldn't even need to touch any bolts.
