New engine

Post by polski »

Hi,
newbie here. Looks like we have to find a replacement engine for a 1.4 TSI 160. Anyone got any recommendations for used/reconditioned engine suppliers?

VW don't want to know. Car is 4 years and replacement estimate is £6k!!

How many miles? Surely VW can't be suggesting an engine should go bang after 4 years? I'd get on to their Twitter team and start complaints. Trading standards etc etc

Agreed, but I think they believe its our fault. Purchased from a non-VW dealer and not in warranty. Apparently no offer of goodwill from VW either.
This after needing to pay £500 just to get the car back in bits!

Don't you void the warranty if you push the revs into the red zone? I thought it recorded that in the diagnostics, so VW would have just checked that.. but anyway that's off topic :shake:

Never heard of that in my life.
So would the same apply to a super car?
Or a car that the power kicks in from high in the Rev range? Don't think that's correct somehow

Did they tell u what went wrong then what caused the engine to break? These engines are troublesome, well documented so ask what the issue was and find out if it's noted on here as a common issue, there are several. I have this engine and it's currently intermittently misfiring - not happy at all.

Fault code 00543 - Maximum engine speed exceeded ..

Not so hard to do see here; http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... 53&p=88370" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then google warranty void and the code for various online debate about it :)

Mileage is 48k. Going to speak to them on Monday to get the details. Car belongs to my daughter. Pride & joy etc etc. She is no idiot driver. Annual services at VW dealer.

There is no way an engine should fail at 48k I would contact their Twitter team and get the cogs moving VW hate negative publicity and it will start the complaints procedure moving. I would also contact trading standards. Also when u know what the issue was that caused the failure, research it and see if it is common, print the various threads and land them on VW's desk.

Sorry to hear about your engine failure - failures on this engine are common, under certain circumstances.

What year is your car?

Blower- 2010. VW saying accelerated wear caused by injecting of fuel into engine. Misfiring leading to compression issues then cylinder wear. But only sign was EMS coming on after having no warning at all

In short its the a-typical piston death, and yes many a time you don't get any EML warnings before it goes.

The cylinder wear would have been the sudden damage caused by the cracked piston when it went. The reason why it went would have been either constant small misfires caused by ignition issues (old sparks), or a bad fuel injector - leaking or spraying incorrectly, washing the cylinder walls (bore wash).

None of these things are your fault. VW revised the injectors at end of 2011/2012, with a wider spray pattern so as to produce a more complete burn.
They also revised the spark plugs multiple times, the original sparks had too wide a gap - 0.9mm and would produce frequent misfires.
Later revisions gapped down to a maximum of 0.8mm, in reality they were 0.75mm. They ran far better and solved the misfire issue.

The only way VW could blame you is if you didn't follow the service regime and have the sparks changed at 40,000 miles.
If VW done the services yearly, then it would be down to them to have changed them.

Result! VW have now come back with a 50% goodwill position. Seems talking to a person instead of a computer has made a difference.

2k or 6k of revs, if there is a 7k in the speedometer it means that the car can reach it.
