4 ticking sounds when turning ignition off ?
i am new here apologies if i am in the wrong forum etc ! i need some help if possible, cheers
i have a 2011 scirocco bluemotion tech tdi 2.0 140 bhp, perfect little car for what i use it for, i got it 4 weeks ago and have noticed as soon as i turn the ignition off i hear 4 small ticking sounds, (everytime) its not metal expansion etc as i get that too after a longish journey, this is a different sound, I'm not sure if it did it when i got it or not, if you listen under the bonnet when it does it, the ticking noise seems to come from the alternator / cam belt region, ive spoke to one mechanic who didn't have to time to look at it just yet (next Saturday) he seems to think its normal, (he never heard it like) to me it sounds like something is trying to start up but failing ( a relay maybe) put it this way when i pull up i get comments saying "mmmm mate that don't sound right"
also on the first day i got it i drove it 3 hrs continuous and got intermittent vibration through the steering wheel and cabin, 70mph + when I got home the engine continued to run for 5 mins as it is supposed to, to cool down etc, next day looked under bonnet there was a tube leading to the air intake pipe (next to battery) it was detached, i thought bingo that's why i was getting the vibration so slipped it back on, vibration is still there but seems to be more responsive though (maybe my imagination) i then read on here its "normal" to have the vibration through the pedal and cabin and maybe try changing wheels front to back etc (which i am going to do )
now i think when turning the engine off it no longer runs the fans following a long journey to cool it down instead i believe i am getting this tick tick tick tick, instead.
I'm no mechanic but this seems to be how it is

Re: 4 ticking sounds when turning ignition off ?
So basically, there are 4 clicking noises when you turn the car off. (breathe).
An air tube would not cause vibration through the steering wheel.
Usually that is bad roads or possibly a wheel weight has come off or something.
The clicking noises are normal. Anti shudder valve closing, EGR valve moving back to open, few other bits and pieces.
You seem to worry too much.

Re: 4 ticking sounds when turning ignition off ?
thanks for that, suppose I should just chill out and except the ticking, got it confirmed today that it is normal and something to do with egr as you have said.
also the wheels are being balanced tomorrow when he can get a replacement tyre so that should be sorted also.
regards the air tube, well the battery was replaced 5/6 weeks ago and you can see that its easy to pull the tube off when replacing the battery so that's that mystery sorted also.
previous I had an astra 1.9 cdti with 180000 (diesel) no vibration, no ticking, no problems well until the gearbox went 4 weeks back but then it was the original gearbox so fare enough. but lets be honest it looks nothing compared to sexy new rocco. ticks are cool if there supposed to be there.
anyway thank you for putting my mind at rest, the car is a great I just needed confirmation really as I have 5 months warranty left to sort out any potential issues.

one more thing, in neutral with the engine running if I press the accelerator it gets to 2500 rpms and stays there wont go over ! is this normal also ? engine protection thing maybe.

Yes, it's normal and as you say it's to protect the engine from being over revved with no load. It's not good for an engine being revved with no load.chrismiked wrote:one more thing, in neutral with the engine running if I press the accelerator it gets to 2500 rpms and stays there wont go over ! is this normal also ? engine protection thing maybe.

Re: 4 ticking sounds when turning ignition off ?
took the car to Vauxhall marshalls today regards the ticking just to ease my mind, they say the egr needs replacing (egr is all they said) and want to charge 1200 for the privelage, (aswell as clutch release bearings £350 another story) are they for real ? is this correct ? I am sure I can find egr valves / coolers for under 200 quid (I didn't know the price until I got home and checked for myself) also if the egr was faulty then shouldn't the engine management light come on ? am so frustrated as one mechanic said its fine and vw say the opposite, ive got he car on finance and a long way to go yet
if it was indeed faulty and I left it will it cause more damage ?
the car makes lots of ticking sounds when it shuts down which i except but can someone confirm they have the continuous 4 x tick tick tick tick, 2 seconds following turning ignition off, if it does it fine, but it sure as hell don't sound like its supposed too (bad design for a nice car)
anyway i am at a loss what to do any suggestions, should i clean the egr out ? and see what happens. i should also say performance is not great in low gears unless i put my foot down then it flys.
any help appreciated

Why bother getting our input when you ignore it and go to a dealer anyway? Who not only aren't even a VW dealer but want to bend you over as well.
Askholes really annoy me!!!!

The intake swirl valves make this sound when shutting the car off.

Re: 4 ticking sounds when turning ignition off ?
well I meant to put volkswagon marshalls not Vauxhall oops my mistake, they are a volkswagon dealer (Ive always had Vauxhall previous must be why I put it) anyway sorry i had to go to the garage as I have a small bit of warranty left and just wanted to check, I doubt very much there is an issue as I would have engine management light yes?
also the ticking does sound exactly like the swirl flaps from the video the other guy sent on here so thanks for that, that's the nearest I've come to a conclusion of the mystery ticks, I presume this is "normal" as so many have advised, I actually took the car to garage for vibration in the clutch pedal and just asked what the ticking was out of curiosity to see what they say wasn't expecting 1200 quote for new egr robbing bxxxxxs.
the vibration is apparently clutch release bearing, which again i doubt is true.
so i will leave it be at that.
thanks guys

If your thrust bearing is on its way you'd hear it.
