Performace and MPG differs after major service

Post by Cydernut »

Just a query if anyone can help?
Put my 2.0 TDI GT170 Scirocco in for a major service at a VW dealer a couple of months ago at 55k. Since having the service my fuel economy has dropped about 4 MPG but the car does feel more responsive. not really complaining but is this normal and has anyone encountered this previously? Looking at the service book the car was previously serviced to the 18K schedule. Use to average 43 - 45 MPG but now lucky to get over 40!

It's probably the lower ambient temperature that's affecting your economy and making the car feel more responsive rather than anything done at the service.

For a month after the service was done the weather was warmer and did notice the improved performance as soon as I drove the car away from the dealer on the day.

As above, could be slight variation in cam timing. Making it more lively but at a slight expense of economy.

No the timing Belt is due to be replaced at the next Service. The car with its previous owner was on an 18k extended mileage service schedule which makes me wonder if some filters or parts may of need replacing sooner than this schedule dictated.

Hey Cydernut, I've also noticed a drop in MPG and it feels like the car wasn't pulling as well under acceleration since I had my service last week. The temperature around these parts has not dropped suddenly and if anything I've been spending more time on the motorway than before the service.

Another thing I noticed since my service is that my fuel warning light came on with 45 miles of range remaining, where as before it would come on with 50 miles to go.

My performance seems to have improved a bit as the car feels more eager so the lower mpg has not been too much of an issue, more a curiosity really. Maybe VW have updated the ECU on our cars and could this be a version of beta software for the supposed cheat fix??
