Rattles and road noise?

Post by Quagmire »

Hi!

I drive a Golf MKV GTI -07 right now and I'm considering getting a Scirocco GT (or TSI ..) with DCC.

How is the scirocco working when it comes to road noise and rattles?

The GTI is a rattle box and I'm getting pretty sick of it, worst rattling car I have ever owned.

'My thinking is that DCC would limit the rattling ..

Road noise and rattles have got to be accepted in a car with large and very low profile tyres, coupled with a firm sports suspension. You might get more rattles in a Golf GTI than a Golf SE, but that's just physics, unless VW lavish loads more money on the higher models dampening or padding everything out.

My most annoying rattle was sorted the other day - it was my lass' sunglasses rattling in the sunglass cubby in the roof. Not VWs fault.

Well my old mk5 GTi never rattled, i was very impressed with this that after 3 years there was still no loose trim / rattling unlike the Renaults / Fords owned earlier, which is why i bought a Scirocco, so its not normal that your hearing rattling,..even with low profile tyres.

Road noise on the other hand is just one of those things..turn up the music.

I have yet to have any rattles and the road noise is not what I consider to be that intrusive or excessive that it is an issue.

Haven't got my Scirocco yet (getting my hands on it this Friday), but I can confirm very slight dash rattles on my MK5 Golf GT Sport, most noticeably at teh low end of revs (1200-1500rpm).

I hope the Scirocco doesn't have any, but I am expecting a little more road noise from the 18" wheels than those 17" on the Golf.

I guess I'd be much happier with an Audi .. I hate rattles and road noise on sports cars.

Errr No. I have a 2008 TT and it has about 5 different rattles that need sorted.
Only 5...? Mine had so many, I lost count. Audi is not the quality you think it is...

my last vw was a new golf vr6 1994!! It rattled and squeaked from new like there was an aviary in the roof, amongst many other problems. went off vw for a long time. my new Gt is blissfully silent so far. (i get the slight sunglass rattle in the roof too)

I've owned an A3 and it was dead silent, oh well, I guess I was lucky ..

What about the DCC/ACC, does it have a limiting effect on rattles?

I just P/x'd my 2006 A3 s-line owned from new over the last 2 and a half years and went back to Audi at least 4 times for strange rattles. Had the Scirocco 3 weeks now and has been much quieter.

No rattles on my new Scirocco, and the suspension is much smoother than that on my MK5 Golf GT Sport TDI 170 (same suspension set up as GTI, but with a heavier engine). At times the Golf seemed a little crashy - not so with the Scirocco - miles better ride comfort.

HaHa that's brilliant.
My Roc developed an intermittent rattle a couple of weeks ago. I swore it was coming from somewhere near the speaker in the passenger door. My GF swore that it was coming from an equivalent position on in the drivers door.
I am taking my Roc into the dealers to get the wipers changed in the next week or so and was dreading trying to pinpoint this rattle too with it being intermittent plus not even being able to pinpoint which side it came from.
Anyway, that was until I read your above post. It was my sunglasses rattling too. It never occurred to me that the rattle only ever happened at night (or on cloudy days) so I'm happy to get that sorted. 8)

I've no other rattles but I will say that the car creeks like no other car I've ever owned. Especially when doing a hill start or a three point turn in the camber of a road the whole rear axle creeks and groans.
It would be good to know if any others do this too and if there is a cure for it.
I don't think it bothers me enough to bring it up with the dealer.

NickP:

I have no groans or creaks at all, but my MK5 Golf GT Sport was very susceptible to them on the back end when going over speed bumps.

If everyone else agrees that their Scirocco doesn't creak, you should take it back and get the suspension looked at.

Thanks, yes I will mention it when I bring it in for the wipers.

For those who are still reading:

There is a VW know issue with a/some potential rattle/s eminating from behind the dash. They have a fix for it and your dealer will do it under warranty.

I had mine done last friday at my ever reliable dealer (Gee Cross VW, Hyde, Manchester) and it's now perfect again.

I suggest taking it up with your dealer :)
