ECU has to be removed!?

Post by Leepash »

So I went to go and get my Scirocco remapped the other day, it's a 2010, 2.0 TSI. After about an hour of them fiddling around with it they came back to me and said that its k-tagged/dealer locked. This means they have to take the ECU out and he mentioned soldering as well.

What is this process? Are there any remaps out there that wont require this? The price has gone up from £225 to £350!

i would get a second opinion mainly because £225 seems VERY cheap for a remap

It's a celtic tuning remap. It is usually £300 but from a local dealer they do it for £225

Ecu use to have to be removed on the older models a few years ago. But nowadays the likes of revo can remap direct through the obd port without having to remove the ecu.

I've managed to get a quote for £359 for a Quantum remap so I'm going to go for that. revo is very expensive! Quantum have a good reputation by the looks of it

I spoke to someone at revo and they said to me I'd get about 250/260bhp which I thought wasn't worth it if I could get 258 for £150 cheaper. I know it's not just about bhp but because quantum have good rep thought I'd go with them. I think maybe in the very distant future I'll end up getting a stage 2 with all the hardware. If i wanted to could I get a revo stage 2 to override my current remap?

It all depends on the encription used, some can not be cracked to be mapped by the port and therefore need the ecu opened up and you have to connect directly to the chip its self, it can be case of who provided the ECU and the software used which is why some years can be mapped by the port, then a car a year later can't, and finally cars even younger can depending on the supplier.

It also depends what software is being used for the maps and who is actually doing them, my preference would be to speak to Mike from Motech performance he has done a few of my cars in the past and I have had some good chats with him over the years on the subject of mapping and cracking encription as I work on the other side of the fence witnessing OE emissions and working with OE manufacturers who are trying to stop people remapping (or atleast making it harder for them),

So are you the guy who has caused all this controversy with vw over emissions. Writing software for cars that makes them pass tests when in fact they could be 40x over the limit. Lol

Yeah it comes to £580 inc. VAT. Decided I won't budget and go all out on a proper remap

I don't write the mapping, I just witness the emissions testing, also VW aren't our customer so nothing to do with me, (plus the issue is the US which is self cert)
