How do you pronounce it?

Post by Jim »

This is a bit like one of those Gif and Jif questions :)

How do you pronounce scirocco?

I've heard SHirocco and sEErocco.

Is one right and one wrong?

I say SHirocco myself.
The name's Jim, or at least that's what it says in my pants.

All the original '74 water-cooled VWs were named after winds! (Polo, Golf, Passat, Scirocco)

As the scirocco wind affects southern Italy, I'd assume an italian pronunciation.

so shirokko

Everyone at my work seems to call it a sEErocco. I've always called it a SHIrocco.

It seems to come from Italian and Greek origins. Any of our members from that part of the world like to shed any light on the pronunciation?

Many people at my work pronounce it SCirocco. I have been varying between this and SHirocco.

Clearly I'm the only one here pronouncing it the way I do: si-RO-koh, with the "si" sound identical to the "si" in "sit" rather than the alternatives here, which frankly sound bizarre to me, "see" as in "(take a..) seat".

I seem to recall the Mk 1 & 2 models were always call SI_rocco - which is what I've bee calling the current model. However I have noticed that most of the VW dealers and other staff are calling it SHI_rocco. Maybe there has been an edict from head office at VW instructing staff on their preferred pronunciation.
Looking for definitions on the web gives "n. hot dry wind originating in the Sahara and blowing across the Mediterranean Sea into southern Europe " - not particularly Italian then.
However most pronunciations offered on the web go for the SHI_rocco option. But there is an alternative spelling of Sirocco.
Personally I say SI_ence (Science); SI_ssors (Scissors) so its SI_rocco.

OK as you may the defining authority on this are there any other Italian words beginning with "SCI" that we might be familiar with and can use as a guide ?

Mind you as a scirocco is a warm wind from the Sahara we might be better off asking some Bedouin tribesman for a definitive answer

Way back when i was considering the purchase of a MkII Scirocco, the only way I every heard it pronounced was Si-Rocco, and often the 'i' was very subtle, sounding more like Sss-rocco.

But I agree, I've heard a large percentage of people (but still not a majority!) pronounce it Shu-rocco.

As long as people don't point at mouth 'Golf' I'm not bothered :)

Perhaps the best new number plate would be. .. SH09 OCO.....

Italian origin or not I'm going to pronounce it like a good old Brit! How many people pronounce Bolognese properly?!

S-rocco with a hard S for me, kind of like the way I'd pronounce 'suppress' (S-press). Sirocco at a push (incidentally, the alternative spelling of the wind)

Or, if you want to be anal: sɪ̈ (ə)'rɒ,kəʊ
