i test drove one today as besides the traction control not being able to be fully turned off its a awesome drive. Very fast too. im actually suprised how fast it actually was
ive pretty much got the spec in mind but obviously would like a discount on a new car. The spec i wanted i was told it would be a car built from factory so i asssume this will come with the 2010 revisions
besdies being torn between deep black and white, im not sure if the deal i was offered was a good one or i could try get more off. i did not hat to haggle very hard to get 8% off the car

you should get the brochure price for all your options and then be looking to get up to 10% off that total, its what you are happy with in the end but you want to be getting at least 7% off or the dealer is just being plain greedy.
Better to get 7% at a good dealer and the associated goodwill if you ever have a problem than get 9% off at a crap dealer who gives you sod all support if there is any issues once you have taken ownership.
get a quote from Broadspeed and see how close your dealer can come but its a buyers market so play hard ball.

As i said was offered 8% with no effort what so ever. I think i could push for 10 %
I would suggest getting:
Flat tire indicator thing - cheap by any count
Reverse sensors - cheaper than reversing into something once in the life of the car...
I was offered 6% off the list price ("That's all our dealer margin gone") and a s**t trade-in on my old car after quite a bit of haggling. They then had the cheek to say that as the 'Roc would not be available for at least 12 weeks, my trade-in would be worth £500 less at delivery time so that needed to be taken into account. Needless to say I walked away. Dealer phoned me back 2 days later but would not offer any more.
I went and bought a ex-demo from a dealer 50 miles away who offered me £1000 more trade-in than I was offered on the new 'roc and decent price on the demo. Much happier - the 'roc was not the exact spec I wanted but was near enough and the deal was right
My 2 most local dealers wouldn't offer more than a £400 discount.
I quoted the required spec through broadspeed and took the process up to the point of getting an email quote.
I then forwarded that quote to the next 6 closest dealers, detailing my financial position (cash sale) and when I needed a reply by and 1 matched that price minus the broadspeed fee (making it £300 cheaper) and another matched the price inclusing the fee (same total price). None of the others even bothered to get back.
I went with the cheapest and everything is going OK so far.
Good luck and don't be afraid to walk away, there's loads of dealers out there.
My dealer would only offer 3% max, no room for further negotiation...usual story about wiping out his margin, etc, etc....in fact he didn't really seem interested in selling me the car at all, never even asked me to take a seat and was more than happy to let me walk without asking for any details etc...I was quite annoyed at the whole experience actually...
The reason I was given by both local dealers was that they only have a limited allocation, and they were confident that they would sell all of them.
The dealer I bought from is in an area where the Roc is probably not a particularly popular choice. They said VW had allowed them to carry one of their unsold cars from the previous allocation, which is why they could discount.
Salesman said they'd "still done alright on the deal". They wouldn't have done it otherwise.
3% may seem greedy and unhelpful, but if they believe that there's people out there willing to pay it, you can't blame them for holding out.
I think with the lead times associated with a Scirocco your unlikely to be able to haggle much. I ordered mine back in early March and still no delivery date but it was in production week 19 (last week) so i am told. I got around £500 off but poor trade in so am looking to sell my current Golf GTi (07 plate) private as they are offering a lump off with no trade in. Same old story credit crunch seams to be hitting them on old and new cars so they say, usual sob story! I generally feel VW seam to drip feed the market when there is clear demand for the product, seam strange when you think of possible turn over but they did it with the Golf last time round and i assume it will be the same with the new Golf GTi. I live up north in the Lake District so not always sure we get the best deals because not many dealerships to bounce between.
Bearing all the above in mind, it looks to me like the best deal can be had by using a broker. I really would have preferred to support my local dealership but at the moment they are £2500 higher than "Drive the Deal", I would have compromised a bit.
It wasn't just the refusal to haggle, which is understandable giving the supply and demand, it was the very uninterested attitude that I received, I couldn't have spoken to the guy for more than a few minutes before leaving the showroom, he just wasn't interested....just because the scirocco's more or less sell themselves is no excuse for total indifference to a very keen buyer...oh well...
Markmorb - Your probably right to go to a broker. It also depends whom you talk to. The first time I went in the guy was as you described - not interested, told me I couldnt test drive at the weekend (!). No effort to sell a car.
I went home, booked the test drive at the weekend using the same dealers web site and made sure I had a different guy to deal with after the test drive. He was much more reasonable, and after initially offering £500 off we settled on £1500 off, both pretty happy I would imagine.
I not going to give the actual savings on my discounts because it includes not paying tax on my cars.
But what I would say is you are more likely to get decent savings by knowing the real worth of your trade in rather than from VW or the dealer.
I was given a joke figure on my last car and told the company involved that if that was their best offer I would not be buying another car from them, I explained that I could quite happily live with a year old car and that they need to sell cars more than I need to buy one.
Low and behold they called me up six weeks later and told me that they had made a terrible mistake and offered me another £1200 for my trade in.
I also got free metallic paint since I was a valued customer.

At the end of the day the dealer can not give you all of the margin in the car, why should they if the car is in short supply and they can sell it to someone
else for more profit. Trying to get the car and the spec you require off the are shelf is either a factory order or a compromise.
Some people have had to wait for six month due to demand. We have two scirocco and ended up with higher spec cars to avoid the wait.

There is around 15% margin in a new car (possibly more with volume bonuses from the car company). To get over 1/2 of that 15% is quite a good deal when you work in the overheads of a dealership (cost of purchasing and maintaining a fleet of demonstators, facilities etc). Most dealers seem to get by on giving you 8% because they get the volume of sales through in a car like a Golf. There is no such volume to achieve in a Scirocco, because the dealerships have such a tight allocation (28 Sciroccos at my local larger than average dealership for the whole of 2009). With so few cars to sell, and demand outstripping supply, a lot of the dealers are holding out for full price, or close to it.
Anyone who has been keeping watch on the brokers prices will have noticed that the discounts have shrunk by at least £200 since the start of the year. The Scirocco came out at unfortunate time - the recession was just starting, after the initial Aug/Sept cars, the dealers were offering healthy discounts because the new car market stopped dead. It's picked up a little since just after Christmas.
I disagree with some of the posts above in relation to sticking with a nice dealer even if the discount isn't great - you can get the nice aftersales service from any VW dealer. Go to the not so nice dealers that are willing to give you 9% off, then go to the helpful ones after you've bought the car for your warranty work and services.
At the moment, if you have a desireable part ex (especially a VW) you should be getting a good price for it - used prices are on the up (again, supply and demand, more people are holding onto their cars during these tight times, so there are less nearly new cars for sale, pushing up prices).
The car you're most likely to get a deal on are those that have already been built, but the allocated dealer is offering them up on the system for other dealers to grab or swap for another. My local 4 dealers are unwilling to discount on one of their allocated allowance cars, but will discount on one they have grabbed from another dealer.
Just after Christmas I was enquiring about a Scirocco for Sept, I was told that my immaculate 57 plate Golf GT Sport TDI-170 3DR was worth £107500 for March 09, and anticipated £10250 for Sep 09. I went back 2 weeks ago to look to order for Sept (based upon 16 week build) and was offered £500 off a factory order from allocation (as a mate is a sales manager there). I was told of a grabbed car that was coming in (swapped with an allocated MK6 Golf), and was told I could have that in 2 weeks, get £500 off, and was offered £12000 part ex on my car (Parkers currently says its worth £11000).
I went away, making out I wasn't totally keen on the colour (they had a demonstrator in at the dealership, same colour and i'd liked it - Pewter Grey, it was always going to be Rising Blue or Pewter Grey). I rang back an hour later and haggled like a turkish market seller, managed to get the £12000 part ex and £1000 off list for the car. I only got all that because I knew the salesman.
The result is that I got £1000 more than Parkers current part ex price plus £1000 discount= £2000 overall saving on expectations.
Picking it up this Friday.

Get your negotiated discount price sorted first, then hit them with the scrapper.
The scrap allowance should be additional to any discount the dealer already gives you, but that's not generally the case according to the press. Some cars that have been advertised as discounted to all buyers have been bought by people with scrappers, but when the customer trys to get the £2000 scrappage allowance on top, the dealer has been absorbing the £1000 manufacturer contribution to the £2000 scrappage allowance into the discount on offer.

Well, I was aiming for a 10 % rebate on the list price. My dealer automatically gave me 6.7 % off to begin with, and I couldn't really push him down very much than that. I checked other dealers and the rebate was similar everywhere, but what was different was the price they would offer for my used car. So i chose the dealer who paid the highest amount for my car. When taking everything in consideration, I saved around 10%. It was either that, or not buying the car altogether as the dealer politely said. Less than that, and they wouldn't be making any margin. Fair enough.
There are (or were on Saturday) 2 black Roccos at Abridge in Harlow - unregistered, GT spec 210ps, both manuals I think, with fairly decent spec, both have a sticker offering around £1500 off (cars list at around 27k)...reckon you could do a pretty decent deal. Lewis is the business manager there and very good to deal with too btw.
