New owner, few questions about servicing/general care taking

Post by Kingsworth »

Just purchased a Scirocco. 60 plate 2.0tsi with 37,000 miles on the clock.

I've never really owned a 'nice' car before, all i've done with previous cars is get them MOT'd (obviously) and then serviced ever 10k miles at my local halfords.

Service history on my new purchase is very good. All genuine VW and all on time etc.

I only do 5k-6k miles a year so very few compared to most. What kind of service regime should I be following? Also, does it have to be at a VW garage or can I continue to do it at halfords (reasonable price, never had any problems etc)

Thanks in advance.

With your use you should follow a time and distance regime, which is every 10k miles / 12 months, whichever occurs first. In your case it will be the latter. There is a service counter to notify you when it's due a service. The user manual tells you how to get it to tell you how many miles / days to next service.

If it's DSG the DSG oil anf filter need to be changed at 40k miles.

It's personal choice who does the servicing amd how important a FVWSH is to you.

An EU ruling a year or two back made it illegal to discriminate between quality of service from a main dealer or otherwise. I've found the main dealers expensive (who do you think pays for those grossly posh showrooms?) and less accommodating. If you have to have a courtesy car you'll probably get a better one from a main dealer but my local 'VW specialist' rather than main dealer serves me well and doesn't pile on extras. My wife has had good experience of Halfords with her car.

If you only do mainly short runs of 7 or 8 miles then engine does not get really warm and it is worth thinking about an intermediate oil and filter change every 6 months. Make sure that the oils used meets VW spec as given in the hand book.
