Clutch Howl - Wear & Tear?

Post by Ciaravella »

Hi all,

I have a Scirocco on 11 plate with 27k miles. It's had full VW service and has recently developed a clutch howl in 1st or reverse. I have looked into this and noticed there's a TPI and TSB relating to this issue. I contacted the customer service and was told to go to the garage.

The garage are due to look at this and has said it sounds like it's a mechanical fault and if so they will offer goodwill for this however if it's wear and tear then they won't and I will be responsible for the removal and refitting about £400.

My question is how likely is it to be wear and tear after only 27k?

Many thanks

Should happen due to wear and tear, its happening because the clutch release bearing is defect (VW revised it)

So far they have had the car for a day, I called and they were unable to recreate the noise despite me telling them it's usually 1st or reverse up a hill. Spoke to mechanic and he said he didn't have that information passed to him. I told him exact noise can be heard on YouTube but they were not interested.

Waiting to see what will happen

And still they can't repeat the sound yet everytime I use the car I get the noise.

Any suggestions on getting this sound. I have mentioned. Revering up hill whilst under load (steering and AC) or same in first but they don't seem to be able to. Had the car since Friday now.

Ciaravella,

You have to position your car on a small incline, put your car in first gear and pull off really slowly. Sometimes it helps to depress the clutch, let the car roll back slowly and then find the biting point and drive forwards. Only apply just enough revs to pull forward, putting your car under load.

This always produced the noise for me, providing you pull off slowly with minimal revs up an incline.

Hope this helps!

I'd look for the steepest incline possible, on a cold day. Also, they have an audio file on the TSB don't they?!?!? I find it so annoying that the garages try to fob you off.

I had the whole "wear and tear" blah blah, we cant help you sorry - I went straight to VW HQ and they quickly changed their tune! Grrrrrrr!

Well went to collect car took the mechanic out and instantly recreated it.

As I had been dropped off expecting to take my car they offered me a taxi. Instead I requested a courtesy car, which they arranged for a couple of days later.

Had the car for 30 minutes and someone decided to rear end me oops. Good news is they accepted liability so no excess to pay, exchanging courtesy cars tomorrow. They have planned for a week, seems excessive for a clutch but hey.

Reckon next courtesy car will be a UP lol

Update on the car. VW have contacted and said its a TPI issue and as such will be offering 70% off the full price of parts and labour. So £300 for al,the work. I have also requested that the entire clutch be also replaced at the same time so a total of about £400.

The car is 2011 and has 27000 miles so I don't think this is too bad.

The whole clutch kit gets replaced as part of the TPI (as far as I know)... So you didnt need to give them the extra instructions I dont think

It may not have been the clutch I can't remember what he said but it would be £100 for the parts, said as clutch and gearbox off it would make sense. Either way it's on its way to being repaired

Everyone,

I've been following this clutch issue for a while as it's starting happening on my car.
I have it booked in next week for some PD work on this issue.
Could someone kindly let me know the current VW TSB / TPI number for this issue as I gave my VW garage a couple of numbers detailed on this forum but they're telling me they aren't valid numbers.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I'm aware they are these.

TPI 2024969/2 - 12 Jan. 2012. - Found this number on another thread.

TSB2028783 - although people claim this is more recognised by VW America. I used this number successfully though.

Hope this helps!

Cheers sciroccorich.

I did give them at least the TSB no. you quoted but they said it wasn't on the system. Which is probably the same as when you've got an issue which is quite common they haven't come across it before :D

I will give them the TPI no. you quoted.

Thanks again for the reply.

My garage didnt find the TSB - but they corrected me and gave me the TPI number instead (how nice), and that matched the number RW1 gave a while ago... apparently it has an audio file attached too

The one on my receipt was TPI n2025969/2. Free play of the clutch pressure plate causing noise. I went with the TPI and TSB and said what was happening they seemed pretty good even though I hadnt taken the car to them and the last service was not VW (not my doing).

Whilst it was off they replaced the throw out bearings for £100 additional fee. I would suggest that you also call VW customer service if they don't respond positively. At present VW are on a customer service push.

Im under warranty so while they have the car in pieces is there anything extra that I should ask the to replace that could have been effected by this or just to save some Labour costs?

Thanks
