FRUSTRATING Weird problem help needed

Post by mistersan »

Hey all,

I've owned a 2009 2.0tdi 140 scirocco for just over 3 years and never had any major problems with it, currently sitting at 67K.

I'e been having this weird problem for around 4-5 months, and VW & other garages cant find out what the problem is.

I start the car on a morning and i can see there is a rough idle, i let it warm up and drive off, i get to around 2k revs and 3 lights flash on my dash(too fast to see which ones but all orange) and the car nearly cuts out, i bring the revs back down and the car is back to rough idle but the 'Engine Workshop' light comes on and the coil light is constantly on.

I then turn the car off for around 3-4 minutes and the car turns on fine, no problem and drives perfectly.

The garages say it is the MAS, we had that cleaned and they cleared the fault codes, 4 weeks later the issue happens again, this time they say they can hear a relay constantly turning on and off just behind the dash.

This happened again yesterday, drove around 30 miles, then at a traffic light it begins to rough idle again, same as last time, lights pop up at around 2k and nearly cuts out.

Any help would be appreciated!!!! so stuck and just want this sorting, the car also has revo stage 1.

Update....

Driving to work today and after around 15 minutes, car fully warmed up, the emission control lamp has came on and the glow plug /engine management light, managed to get to work without issue.

Going to book it back in to the garage today, they did mention during my MOT last month that the EGR unit was 'falling to pieces' but wouldn't cause this?!

Thanks,

San.

EGRs do not fall to pieces but they do get clogged up if your only doing short trips every day. A faulty EGR will log a fault code so get it plugged in to some diagnostic equipment and see what's stored.

Hi Andy,

I used to do around 90 miles a day up until 2 years ago, now its around 18 round trip so yes definitely could be clogged up. (Is it worth getting a Terraclean done to clean out the EGR then?).

Thanks a lot,

Hassan.

Sorry in addition to this - They actually said it was the EGR cooler that was falling to pieces rather than the EGR valve.

Hi All,

Anybody who has been monitoring this:

I took it to the garage this morning, by the time i got there, they basically told me to take it to VW with out even looking at it (Says a lot about the garage!!!)

I took it to VW, theyve managed to find an issue with a relay that is affecting the fuel pump, and in short could be cutting it on and off.

£65+VAT to fit - part coming tomorrow so will see if this fixes it.

Thanks,

Hassan.
