Car bumped into, bumper respray needed

Post by adamjwright1990 »

Hi,

Was driving home from the Blackburn game on Sunday (Middlesbrough Fan) :) and there was a bloke infront in a disability VW Caddy van. He stalled 3 times at the traffic lights which were on a bit of an incline and eventually hit my car. I have a dent just above the number plate and have been quoted £492 to have it repaired by a VW authorised repairer. Do people think this is too steep?

Also what if the person who bumped into me refuses to pay that much or give insurance details, do i get the police involved? i have two witnesses who were in the car with me.

Thanks

Sorry to hear that, it's annoying when things like this happen even if you don't have to pay for it.

Always a tricky one when the car was in front of you, they may claim that you hit them, although I'd ask that if this was the case then why didn't they stop to speak to you. If you have witnesses then you should be okay although they may not be neutral witness if they were with you in the car.

If all is well the worst that will happen is that you will have to use one of his insurances approved repairers, although getting your own quotes and demanding your choice is used is not a bad road to go down

Hope you get it sorted!

The Police will not be interested as no one was injured, although the other driver is legally obliged to hand over their insurance details. Also, I'm pretty sure your witnesses are irrelevant as they are not independant as they were in your car and as such wpuld be expected to take your side.

It does sound expensive but.bodywork repairs are labour intensive and the hourly rates are eye watering.

Hope it all gets resolved for you without too much fuss.

Thanks, ive been on the phone to him and he said he isnt decided if he will pay for it or get his insurance to pay for it.

I definitely want to try and get it done by an approved VW repairer which in my case is RMB auto. I read somewhere that if bodywork isn't carried out by an authorised VAG repairer the corrosion warranty is void?

Will the colour of the car (Viper Green) have an affect on that price? the bloke who gave me the estimate said it's a hard colour to match.

It's just a fart on having to sort all this out when im the victim! but nevermind.

If it was me, I'd just go through my insurance. If you're not at fault.
It's tricky when this happens, even though he hit you, apparently you're supposed to leave a reasonable gap between you and the car in front. This could be a car length!! In reality this doesn't happen as we know, if we all did this we could at least sound our horn before it hits you!!
Your insurance would make sure the car goes to an authorised repairer and provide you with a loan car. Seeing though the accident happened a couple of days ago they can be funny about that too!! Notifying them immediately and all that crap!
Good luck whatever happens.

Your insurer will probably not send it to an authorised VW repairer but one they have a trade discount with unfortunately although sometimes this may be VW accredited. Most reputable repairers will give you a warranty that matches the manufacturers body warranty but have not had experience of anyone claiming on this. Since you are claiming on the other party you need to insist it goes to an authorised VW repairer plus if you need a hire car while yours is repaired the other party will have to pay once the faulty party has been decided. If you do not go through the insurance you could be out of pocket.

Sorry to hear your car has been hit.

£492 sounds exspensive, if its just above number plate then a local repair should be possible and then when bumper is sprayed the colour will be painted thick over and around the repair then just flicked around the sides, then whole bumper is laquered. That way where the colour meets the wings it will still look same as no colour was actually applied there if that makes sense. Also because of the big glossy black grill you wont notice a colour issue to the bonnet as they dont marry next to each other.

I worked @ a bodyshop stripping cars for 7 years and this is exactly how we would have repaired it and it would have been 100%.

Unless bumper is in need of direct replacment, then the wings would be blended, basically sprayed 1/3 where meets bumper and rest of wing laquered.

Hope this all makes sense

If it helps at all I had my front bumper sorted by a VW body shop and it was around that price. :)
