Are you waiting for the glow plug light to go out?

Does it only happen at low temps?

If so, could be faulty glow plugs or fuel pump not priming.

It starts fine first thing usually happens when been out for a run then go to restart

Does sound like it wants to start but turn the key and nothing

I do wait for light glow light to go off

That could be the coolant temp sensor
First thing to do is to get it scanned with VCDS.
