DSG ?

Hi all.
New to the forum and new to VW ( even tho I am 'car-less' at the moment!)
I've been on the search for a 1.4TSi (160) but to no avail at the moment, i'm probably to picky !
Stumbled across one this morning with a DSG gearbox tho I have always driven a manual.
Asked my mechanic friend his opinion and he assured me that they were ok
I understand that there are faults with everything in life, but i have heard a few negative comments about them.
As I said at the start, I am new to VW and am sure there have been loads of threads regarding DSG's, just needed a general opinion before I consider it further.

See I always thought they were fine with not many problems especially if looked after. But this morning the wife's cousin said a spanner monkey at a local Vw specialist near him said to steer away from a dsg r32, wether it's the same box as the rocco I don't know.

I just bought a 46,000 '09 1.4TSi 160 yesterday & just started reading the 1.4 engine concerns [emoji20] I'm hoping that there are plenty of good ones out there and the problem ones are few and far between. Here's hoping...

The R32 uses the same 6 speed DSG box as the Rocco. I did over 80k miles in my DSG R32 over 5 years without any issues from the DSG. If they fail it tends to be the mechatronics unit which is very expensive to replace but companies now repair and refurbish them for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

As with most things the internet and forums tend to focus on the negatives so it's hard to get a balanced view

The company that repairs / refurbishes them is Ecu Testing.

If he's not a member already point him to R32OC.com, plenty of good info. and a great bunch of guys.

I agreed with cuprabob , just to add that r32s are generally fine but there was an issue with stretching chains at some point, The dsg debate has been done to death, but in general 6 speed more reliable than 7. And the newer the better.

In reality bar the mechatronics unit the dsg box is a manual gearbox (well 2) so other than the normal bearings no different to a manual, if anything the clutches and synchromesh should last a hell of a lot longer in a dsg.

Most issues on the 6-sp box (tend to be rare) are with the mechatronics unit.

The issue with the 7-sp DQ200 box fitted to the 1.4 160s, however, is the clutch pack. Its a big issue across the VAG range.

Upgraded packs were introduced in 2013. Whether this has solved the issue or not only time will tell.

However, should you wish to buy a 2011 black 160, 26K miles, with a spanking new and upgraded clutch (with 2 years warranty), I would be interested in your reasonable offer :-)

I had more a jolting at take up rather than just judder. Worse when the car was at normal operating temperature and very difficult in stop-start traffic. The car had full main dealer service history & the DSG oil had been changed. I was convinced it would be the mechatronics unit but VW advised a complete gearbox change after the dealer found iron filings in the gearbox oil! Now the transmission is perfect, don’t assume the mechatronics is the fault. Moral of the story is keep the extended warranty up to date!
