BUYING ADVICE NEEDED - 1.4 122bhp or 160bhp??

Post by jaket5222 »

Hi,

I am new to this site and looking into getting a Scirocco soon!
As i work close to home there is no point me getting the diesel, therefore i'd like the petrol however i have read a few things about the 160 not been a very reliable engine?? Yes it has more power than the 122bhp which would make it more fun but is there alot of common faults in the 160 that the 122 doesn't have?

Any advice/knowledge would be great!
Thanks in advance!..

The 2.0 TSI would be abit too much on fuel wouldn't it??

Thats why i was considering the 160 1.4 as its ok on fuel and decent power:/

The tsi isnt as bad as some might think. But it would also depend on how hard you drive it. Im sure mpg on the 2.0 tsi has been coverd before so have a search around. Forum is full of usefull information so its worth looking around.

Ok thanks :) To be fair mpg isn't too much of a worry, the main worry is all these stories i have read on here about big faults in the 1.4 160 engines.. I just wondered it there is certain engines or car manufacturer year to stay away from..

Again, if you can afford it, get the 2.0
The 1.4s are known to be temperamental

I was going to get a 1.4tsi 122 then I saw a 2.0tsi and had to get it :)
I can get 43-44 mpg on long motorway journeys going 80 i mean 70 ;)
Even when I am having a spirited drive see high 30s insurance wasn't as bad I expected either.

Do it 2.0 tsi you wont regret it :)

Ahh that's not too bad actually!Just assumed a 2.0 petrol engine with that much bhp would just drink up fuel!
I'll look into it and see what happen's in the upcoming weeks! :D

I have the TSI 160 and a 2.0 GTI golf. There is very little difference in fuel consumption. The 160 returns about 38/39mpg while the Golf returns about 36mpg on the same run with same driving style. The 160 is a bit better around town though.

As to reliability of the 160, I have a 2011MY. done 36k miles and not had any problems at all. I think you need to get a 2011 plate or later as that appears to be when the problems - misfire etc - were finally sorted. Do not get a model with the 7 speed dsg box as they go through clutches after about 25k miles

MY - Model Year

With VW the model year changeover in production is around week 22 therefore a MY2011 is from around July 2010 to June 2011

Although its confusing when i have read that scirocco's 2011 and later have the full red TSI badge instead of the black T and the red SI, i have seen some 2011/12 scirocco's with a black T and red SI?? Any idea's on this?:/

The 122s all have bLack TS and a red I,

The 160s had black T and red SI up to MY2011 (introduced at week 22 of 2010), then changed to all red TSI: http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/roccop ... el_Changes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

The problems with the 1.4 were pre 2010 in ink. I have a 61 plate 160 tsi from new and just covered 40k mile. Serviced at vw and no engine problems at all, runs great. Personal choice really I tested the 140 diesel and did not like it, plus from new could not justify the extra cost at the time. Depends how old you are the 2.0 is better but mpg and insurance is higher. 122 does not have the different suspension setting as I recall, and is quite sluggish but is ok for a younger driver who needs cheaper insurance.

Whatever you go for will be great I am sure.
