Scirocco (2011) - RCD 510 - Speaker upgrade advise needed
I have just got a 2011 Scirocco with the RCD510 head unit. Volume is fine but the sound quality isn't great. I don't want to go down the full ICE route with amp/subwoofer so have 2 questions:
1) Is it possible to get a good improvement in sound quality by just replacing the standard speakers.
2) If the answer to 1 is yes then any suggestions on which speakers to get?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the reply. When fitting did you just have to take the door panels off? The pictures in the facebook link shows everything being pulled apart. This is what I am trying to avoid.

You can't change the speakers without removing the door panel.Railton wrote:Thanks for the reply. When fitting did you just have to take the door panels off? The pictures in the facebook link shows everything being pulled apart. This is what I am trying to avoid.

Yes, I realise that. What I meant was did you only take off the door panel? Did the crossover fit in the door?
One other question. Did you use an additional amp or are they run directly off the 4x20w output from the RCD510?
Thanks.

Whoa that was quick!
Yes mate will take some now.
With regards to fitting you have to;
• Pop out the silver triangle trim on the doorcard - I used a hard plastic trim tool
• Remove the Black triangle door grab handle (the bit the silver bit clips into) - I used a large cable tie fed through the slots nearest the back of the car the used a large flat headed screw driver to help it out. You have to really force it but be brave it will pop out.
• Remove the 3 torx screws inside
• Remove the 2 torx screws along the bottom edge of the door card
• Pop of the trim clips down either side of the door - again take a bit of force. Some people buy spares from VW their only a few quid as they tend to break easy.
• Remove all the wiring plugs inside the door card and the door latch cable
• Remove the old speakers from the door and the tweeters from the door card. The tweeters will just lever out with a small screwdriver
• Install the new speakers in the door
• Install the new tweeters in the door card - they are a perfect fit and just a couple of blobs of superglue to hold them in place
• A bit of simple wiring (I will supply the plug adapter) you will need some crimps and butt connectors
• Tape the cross over box down - I used double sided tape and stuck it to the bottom edge of the door card
• Then reverse the procedure to put the door card back on
It sounds difficult but isn't too bad. A quick google search will find you some pictures etc I think i followed a guide for the Mk6 Golf.

Great, thanks for the instructions. Very helpful. It says the tweeters were a perfect fit, do you know the model number of the speakers that were fitted?

Re: Scirocco (2011) - RCD 510 - Speaker upgrade advise neede
I have just bought some JBL GTO-609c for the front and some JBL GTO-6508C for the rears. I have Connects 2 CT25VW01 VW Speaker Adaptors for the front and rear. I am now sat here wondering how to go about this, any help appreciated -
1. Do I need to fit the crossovers as their is wires in-place for the speakers and tweeters already?
2. I have no speaker cable adapters, can you not just cut the VW ends off and crimp spade connectors on?
3. Any other tips?
Front doors look reasonably easy but do you really need to take the seats out to do the rears?
Thanks

I am now in the same position as you! do I need to fit the crossover as there are already separate wires for the tweeter and speaker?gdbarratt wrote:I have just bought some JBL GTO-609c for the front and some JBL GTO-6508C for the rears. Also did you need to drill out the original speaker as it seems to be held in with rivets?

I installed woofers and tweeters using the crossover supplied (JBL) and was largely dissapointed with the treble / high range.
I then removed out the JBL crossover and just rewired the tweeter and woofer utilising the existing wiring - it sounds a lot better now....
Clearly NOT a good idea to use your own crossover unless taking from a different source... I'm unsure as to whether the standard filtering is done via wiring in the door or elsewhere, but I'm happy now...

The speakers aren't really the issue imho... the RCD510 lacks a decent amplifier, so I would change that first.Railton wrote:I have just got a 2011 Scirocco with the RCD510 head unit. Even considering my car has Dynaudio, just changing from the RCD510 to RNS315 made a big difference to the quality of sound. Enough that I'm not considering different speakers / sub as it sounds superb.
VW Scirocco GT 170 in shadow blue metallic with vienna leather, cruise control, parking radar, nav, bluetooth and dynaudio sound system. Remapped and shortshift fitted.

I use a Audiotec Fischer PP52DSP. It is an Amp/DSP that is designed to strip all the poor EQ from your RCD510 and improve the sound of your stock speakers. VW uses there kit on some models as the upgraded sound system. Same speakers ect.

if you were using stock headunit then this is your problem.
Using aftermarket HU will probably give you better quality.
I have Kenwood DNX520VBT and improvement in sound over RCD510 was big
I have Hertz 4ch amp, Hertz ESK163.L speakers
Second mono amp for my Pheonix Golf 12" sub.
Sounds pretty good to be fair.

Re: Scirocco (2011) - RCD 510 - Speaker upgrade advise neede
Little update since my last post...
I've wired in a JL audio amp, but still feeding the woofer and the tweeter through the VW built-in crossover in the doors.
There seems to be a lot of VW (mainly golf) installs done using upgraded components, but leaving the standard crossovers in place... I'm beginning to think that this is a bad idea as (after doing A LOT of research) the common consensus is that crossovers are tuned uniquely for the speakers that are installed.
So, I'm going to do a test this weekend where I take the speaker outputs from the amp and go to the JBL crossover and then out to the woofer & tweeters, completely bypassing the VW crossover... will update when I've done it....

Again I ask do you have stock head unit in place?
If so the testing is irrelevant. Replace head unit with a proper one. Instead of 4x5w output you'll move up to 4x20 or 4x50 and the inbuild DSP will be far better.
