RSN510 Map Update
Hi,
I have a 2009 VW Scirocco with a RNS510. It currently has Version 3 West Europe Navigation maps which is the version the car came with from new.
I would like to update these maps to version 10 West Europe Navigation maps but I'm not sure if I'd need to update the units Firmware to do this. I'm not even sure whether the V10 maps update has an updated firmware built in (inclusive).
Is there anybody out there that can put me straight as I don't want to brick the unit (mess it up)?

Re: RSN510 Map Update
Some info here. Hope it helps.
I didn't need to update my firmware for a 2013 car but that's not really surprising as the v10 maps were only 6 months or so newer. I gave up with downloading the update and burning it to a DVD, it cost me £20 for blanks discs twice and still didn't work. Ended up paying £22 or similar to someone on ebay for what looks like a genuine v10 disc, worked fine.
You need one of the guys posting on the thread to anwer your question, metaljay, uklee or dimexi.

Re: RSN510 Map Update
If your 2009 car is still on its original maps , then its more than likely still on its original firmware . If this is the case , then you will definitely need to upgrade your firmware first - before you can install v10 maps.
The first thing you need to do is establish what firmware you are running . There's so good info in this thread http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... nu#p130234

Re: RSN510 Map Update
I am guessing that thread says to hold down setup to find out your firmware version... Might not be possible on yours, if not, use VCDS (if you have access), you should be able to find it on the HW/SW labels for the autoscan output of the RNS scan - failing that, the firmware would be on a sticker attached to the RNS510, you need to remove the unit to get access to that.
There is a risk of bricking your unit when you update firmware. There are firmware updates out there that have been modified to work with ALL devices. I think 4218 is a good one to use - that thread should have info on that. If not, I am happy to help
P.S: You also dont need a double layer DVD for the firmware. Just a regular DVD +r or DVD-r

Re: RSN510 Map Update
Isn't V10 software too big for a single layer disc? The one I downloaded from tpb certainly was but as it didn't work guess it could have been anything!

Re: RSN510 Map Update
The 'V10 MAP' file is large , so needs to go on a dual layer DVD , the FIRMWARE file is much smaller and doesn't need a dual layer dvd .chelspeed wrote:Isn't V10 software too big for a single layer disc? Yahh the V10 map on TPB does work I used itchelspeed wrote:Isn't V10 software too big for a single layer disc? The one I downloaded from tpb certainly was but as it didn't work guess it could have been anything!
I think its about 4 gb, imation dual layer DVD-R burned low speed (like 3x) then put in your headunit select copy maps to Hardrive or something as opposed to use from disc, click the copy maps to hard-drive option and voila. You can check the progress by pressing the eject button and it says are you sure you want to eject or something like that and it shows how long left for update.

Re: RSN510 Map Update
Sorry uklee didn't read dimexi's comment properly.
V10 from tpb 5.2GB. Single layer disc 4.7GB, double layer 8.5GB. Yep did exactly that, burned it, at 2x speed I think, using Nero but put the disc in the head unit and it just said disc error. Someone recommended an alternative burning software but I never got round to trying that.
When are we likely to see V11 for me to have another go? Garmin update every 3 months and that's navteq based which I think is what VW use too. But I guess if they were doing that we'd be on a lot higher than V10 by now, more like V100.
All very interesting but I guess not too helpful for the original poster.

Re: RSN510 Map Update
I think the OP's question has been answered.
Personally, I dont see the point of updating Maps too often, roads seldom change and I am not sure people use POIs that much to be obsessed with the next restaurants that spring round the corner... Well, not me anyway. v11 is probably round the corner.
Another DVD burner to use is IMGBurn, that's the one I used and it works very well and is free

Re: RSN510 Map Update
I'm an ex road rally navigator so I'm obsessed with having the most up to date maps. Over the last few years I can think of several major road changes that I use regularly that would have left you scuppered if relying on an out of date sat nav. The A1(M) dual carriageway up by Ferrybridge just stops in the middle of nowhere if you try and follow the old road, you need to take a bypass a couple of miles earlier to stay on the A1(M). Similarly the A34 between Leicester and Newark has changed a lot, if you're driving up the A34 the sat nav will have you in the middle of a field which is not too confusing but try and join the new road from some of the north south roads in the area and you'd be totally stumped.dimexi wrote:roads seldom change
When V11 appears I will certainly give IMGBurn a go, thanks for the info.
