Engine rattle - is this normal?
Hi all,
Video below shows my engine when idle. I realise that the characteristic of the 2.0 tsi engine is to sound like a diesel but this sounds beyond this to me. Can anyone shed some light on this for me and explain if im being completly paranoid - and if you have had the issues what it was?
Thanks

That does sound a bit rattly, as you say they are a little rough sounding by nature. Daft question - is there enough oil in it?

Is the performance ok? What kind of mileage is on the car?
Maybe a trip to the dealer is in order, is there warranty left on it?

Performance is fine - 27,000 on the clock. Took it to my trust worthy mechanic (as no warranty sadly) and he believes it sounds like something to investigate but not to panic about for the moment. Just interested to see if anyone else has had this issue.

Re: Engine rattle - is this normal?
Ok 27k is nothing , I would suggest looking at the Scirocco buyers guide link http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... t=#p113643" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (written by our late and very great tech expert Chris).
There is a piece about rattly engines, it could be a timing chain tensioner malfunction. I would suggest getting it seen to though as it could be delaying potential expensive trouble.

Re: Engine rattle - is this normal?
it doesn't use much oil at all. I topped it up last week for the first time since service (september) and even then it wasn't low. Thanks for the advice on the scirocco buys guide, i wonder if it is something to do with the timing chain tensioner, it's something i've heard mentioned before. I may take it in to vw for a bit of advice, hopefully they dont charge for advice!

Hi mate what was the problem here and was it a major one? Mine sounds similar but not as loud.
A neighbour asked me for a jump start on his van tonight when i got home from work. No problem, this is the first time iv`e had the bonnet up with the engine running and it sounded very tappy. Its done 17k and just over 3 years old.

Re: Engine rattle - is this normal?
Well i took it to my trusty mechanic, spoke to others with the 2.0 tsi engine and can probably blame poor video quality and possibly my ridculous OCD about everything, this appears to be standard on this particular engine. Although yes it does seem a little worse when its cold. Hope this helps!

Re: Engine rattle - is this normal?
I've been led to believe it's the tsi engine so it certainly could be all the personally never owned a 1.4. A friend of mine has the 1.4 and it's got the familiar noises!

Re: Engine rattle - is this normal?
A mate of mine has the 1.2 seat Ibiza and a neighbour has the 1.2 Polo bough sound louder than a diesel. So is it a common thing that VAG and AAG have nosiy engines?

Theres no such thing as "grey area" im just plain and simple "black & white"
