Engine noise question
Test drove a 1.4tsi 122 yesterday 2011 , when I turned the engine on it sounded like a diesel for about 10 seconds and then went real quiet like it should . Question is , is this normal for these engines to make this noise ? Thanks .

Yes, hydraulic tappets, it take a few secs for the oil pressure to build up

Any engine noise is not good, if left standing a long time it may be hydraulic tappets best to see if it does it after a run, think your better off with the 2ltr or a diesel for reliability

Dont do enough miles for a diesel . It didnt seem to make the noise after a few seconds and while we were sitting idle . Was literally only at start up. The clatter you hear on start up is not a good sign, the i.4ltr is renown for pinking ect on start up, may be lack of oil in hydraulic tappets or poor ignition settings on start up, after a run turn engine off for 10 minutes on start up if no noise the problem is probably ignition timing on a cold start up

And if it's just ignition timing on a cold start up is that a major problem or will the car be ok ? Probably ok just don't rev it till it sorts itself out, would ask vw if an update for ecu is available

No post highjack intended but my engine is doing pretty much the same thing. My 2.0 GT sounds a bit like a diesel just after start up and occasionally at traffic lights after 20 mins or so of driving......... i'll get it checked.

aaarrrrrgggghhhhh.
this is the thorn in the side of my otherwise enjoyable experience of owning a scirocco. I've had it into VW 3 times with the problem.
it tends to manifest itself only when the weather is warm and the car has been sitting for a couple or a number of hours. immediately after starting, the revs rise to about 1100 to 1200 with a terrible noise coming out of the exhaust sounding like the catalytic converter is broken. after 30 seconds, it drops down to 600-700 revs and is quiet as a baby.
embarrassing when passers by give it a second look, as the car sounds like a clapped out motor.
VW main dealer tell me this is normal. (obviously my last 10 cars were abnormal, as none of them made this sound). when the engine coolant is at a certain temp, the engine does this to quickly reach operating temperature, and has a "blaring" (their word) sound.
this makes no sense to me, and reading their explanation, i feel we are being fobbed off, as what is given as an explanation, is merely a detailing of a common complaint rather than a cause or possible solution. their explanation would make sense in cold weather, but still doesn't explain the terrible noise
strikes me that they don't know what it is, and are hoping to not do anything about it. i guess, if a few engine failures, etc are connected to this, it would be cheaper to sort these than recalling every 1.4 122ps. am i being cynical?????

Had a similar problem with my 160. It started normally but after about 5 secs it sounded as though the exhaust was blowing and the revs dropped. It is a known problem and the dealer recognised it after looking at VW fault list. ECU reprogrammed and no further problems.

That sounds like the Secondary Air Injection system where fresh air is pumped into the exhaust to reduce emissions and get the cats upto optimum temperature ASAP. You get a faster idle, increased noise within the engine bay and tje exhaust sounds a little funny.carmanvw wrote:aaarrrrrgggghhhhh.

Hi
I've been having exactly the same problem with my tsi. Went to one dealer who were obviously concerned and changed tensioner chains, camshaft adjuster, tappets...not made any difference in the slightest. Went to another dealer who spoke to VW and told me is all about getting the temp up and not to worry. Afraid I'm still not convinced. It doesn't make sense as it doesn't happen when cold! Although I'm not a mechanical chap.

And I yours, drfez. Even cuprabob's explanation makes more sense than the written explanation from the main dealer- very disappointing, almost every time I start it, now that the weather is warm. I really thought I could expect better from VW after so many years in car production.. While this may be normal to them, my next car won't be a VW because of this fault. Time for a bmw or possibly skoda vrs, and hopefully they don't carry everything over from VW.
