Very weird noise coming from engine

Post by welshroces »

Hey guys i have a 2010 Scirocco TDI GT with 31k on the clock and havent had any problems with it for the last 18+ months and i get in my car this morning to go to work and as soon as i start the engine this really loud rattling noise !
As soon as i engage the clutch and put it in any gear the sound stops but noticed as soon as i get it in 4th,5th,6th gear there is an increased noise but nothing like what it is like in neutral!

If anyone has had this problem or may have some idea of what it is and how much it could cost i'd be greatful !

Obviously hard to diagnose noises over the internet but does sound like the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) may be the culprit, although would not expect it to be an issue at such a low mileage. If it does turn out to be DNF, worth speaking to VW about goodwill based on low mileage, sssuming the car has a FVWSH.

If only i could put a recording up of it on here ! What has confused me is that it's just come out of nowhere over night ! Obviously i have no idea about cars but i've been reading what other people have been saying and could possible be transmission, gearbox or something about a throwout bearing?! But as i said no idea about cars what so ever! If it was to be this flywheel would it be an expensive thing to replace?

Problem is it is easy to speculate over the internet and automatically think the worst. Best to get it diagnosed correctly by your local dealer or VW indie.

That is very true ! I think i'll be heading down to a local garage and see what they come up with as my local volkswagen dealer isnt the best when they tried to tell me the cheapest tyre they had there for my car was £220 and was the only one available no matter where i went !

Get to the garage! Sounds very similar to what I had - a rattle noise when idle which stopped when you pressed the clutch down. It turned out to be the clutch plate spring had broken, and the technician at the garage diagnosed it immediately. I was advised to stop driving it immediately in case it caused damage to the gear box. All sorted under warranty thankfully.

Does the noise occur with the bonnet open (and propped up) or just when shut ? While I have not had major "noise" issues on mine, the bonnet stay rod used to rattle about until I wedged a piece of bath sponge under it to absorb the flexing / vibrations. I wouldn't have described my noise as "really loud" though - but I am hoping your car has something simple & cheap to fix rather than the major nasties mentioned higher up the page.

Fingers crossed for you !

I know this is a stupidly long reply ! but it was the dual mass flywheel ! i know you've probably got it fixed but just had to post! (been travelling whole last year) after the shocking services from Volkswagen and having to threaten them with court action i finally got it done ! and then the next day part exchanged it for AMG A Class and not looked back ! haha shame as the look and drive of the car was spot on ! I can safely say i won't buy another VW again !
