Giving My Roc The Viper Treatment

Post by Brocky »

No, not the paint! :shake:

I'm thinking about getting an aftermarket alarm for my new GTS. Namely, the Viper 5704V - 2-way security & remote start system.

I was wondering if anyone had this, or another, Viper alarm system fitted to their Roc and would be willing to share their experiences on how well it and the Roc get on with eachother, how they found using it and maybe also recommend the people they got to fit it, as I'd like to have mine fitted by someone who has put one on a Roc before.

I'd also like to know if there would be any issues with the car's warranty, having had one of these fitted. I guess that if the alarm is deemed to have caused the fault, then warranty wouldn't apply....right? The guy in the review video says that you get a lifetime warranty on the install from approved Viper installers....although he's in the US....so does anyone know if the same applies over here too?

Also, does anyone know roughly how much I might save on insurance, if I had one of these fitted?

Sorry I can't help you with the viper question ,
But have you considered having a tracker fitted instead ?

The way I see it , the Rocco already has a thatcham approved alarm / immobiliser fitted by VW.
Plus (realistically) if the scum really want your car - then they're gonna take it any way. It sad ( but true ) that most people ignore car alarms going off - certainly the thieves do.
If it's immobilised then they'll tow it . If they want the keys - they'll turn your house over.

I'm not being dramatic , you see it in the news everyday :-(

At least with a tracker , you've got a bloody good chance of getting it back before they do too much damage or lose it forever. Plus , you do get a hefty discount on your insurance if you fit an approved one.

VW approve ( and sell) the CobraTrak system , it's insurance approved and shouldn't give you any problems with warranty.

Just a thought...

I've had a viper in the past on an fto, it alerted you to tilt & motion sensors like being jacked & towed etc. It was alright, can't say I found it any better than other toad & Clifford alarms I've had though.

I hadn't, but after looking into it, I could get the Viper 2-way security & remote start system fitted for around the same price and this wouldn't require any kind of subscription. It will warn me, on the pager, as soon as anyone gets too close and will detect the car being jacked up, if someone is trying to have my wheels off. The remote start is a huge bonus for me, also....and it is pretty cool, as well.

If I had an R or an M3/M5....something really high-end, then I'd likely invest in a tracker set-up for use alongside the Viper system....but the visual deterent of a top-end alarm system is enough to put off 9 out of 10 car thieves....the lowly, chavvy joy-riding chancers....and the other 1 out of 10 that would have the skills and balls to take it regardless, won't be bothered with a GTS and will be more likely after the Rs and Ms of this world.

No security system will ever give you a guarantee, of course, but if it means that those chavvy, joy-rider types walk past my car to find an easier target than a Viper-armed GTS, then I am happy taking my chances with the pro's.

Viper and Clifford are owned by the same company and use many of the same components, these days.
