Media In/ Aux In/ Aux Out Cable for iPhone 4s
Hello fellow Rocco's. I am in search of a part number or ,even better the cable itself, that enables my iPhone 4S to interact with the RCD 510 Head Unit. The cable has a pin or cylinder on one end and plugs into the interior of the driver's armrest in a position marked Aux In/Aux Out. The other end of the cable fits into the lower slot of the iPhone with the same type if connection used for charging. It apparently allows the iPhone to work through both the RCD 510 as well as be operated by the MFD on the steering wheel. I have tried numerous dealers, here in South Africa to no avail. They cannot even find the part on their systems. I have tried Apple iStores as well as a few In Car Experts with even less success. I would greatly appreciate the actual part number. I am prepared to use a courier service to collect and deliver for me, so if you do know where the cable may be obtained please kindly assist.

Re: Media In/ Aux In/ Aux Out Cable for iPhone 4s
Hello Cuprabob. Thank you for your input. The VW part number you quoted is for the earlier versions of the Scirocco, which have the device located in the glove compartment. My November 2011 model has a hole inside the driver's armrest, into which the Aux unit is plugged into. The dealers called today to say that they had contacted Germany and discovered that I require two individual parts. The one plugs into the armrest and is apparently called a " Media Device". A second cable then clips onto it and can be plugged into the iPhone. The approximate cost at this stage is the equivalent of £ 280 excluding VAT and fitting. I have got a feeling that somebody at VW is living in a parallel universe and/ or I am about to be taken for a ride. There surely has got to be a simpler solution. Any information gladly accepted.

The P/No I quoted is read straight off the packaging for the cable that came with my MY2012 Rocco which has the MDI port in the armrest.

Re: Media In/ Aux In/ Aux Out Cable for iPhone 4s
Thanks Cuprabob. I will try again tomorrow. Maybe it is the dealer being a bit obtuse. It is not the dealer from whom I bought the car new, but a dealer that is located in a town where I do most of my business. I actually approached them about 3 months ago about this and got the old "we will get back to you" treatment. As a matter of interest I gave them the car at 5 000 kms to change the oil and oil filter. The next morning, after driving home about 125 kms, I found most of the oil had leaked out onto the garage floor. The sump plug had been changed and not properly tightened. I wish that I could run my business in such a shoddy manner. Thank you again for your confirmatory advice.

Re: Media In/ Aux In/ Aux Out Cable for iPhone 4s
I may be wrong but is there such a lead as a 3.5mm aux to iPod/iPhone. I have never heard an aux cable that can control your iPod/iPhone through the radio. I think you might just have to use a standard 3.5mm aux to 3.5mm aux cable and control it through the iPod/iPhone. These only cost about £1-5
I thought you had to have a MDI (media device interface) for it to control through the head unit. This is where the leads that have been suggested plug into which is usually located in the storage area under the armrest.

You are right. I somehow missed the Aux In and thought he was talking about the cable between the MDI and the iPhone.
The 3,5mm is just an audio in jack and can provide no control functionality.

Not yet - although it's apparently 'coming soon' ( and has been for a while....)massimo19 wrote:I got one off amazon for my ipod but I have the iphone 5s is there a media in cable for the 5s? or will I have to use the aux
You can still hook us your 5 / 5S though - you use the VW iphone 3/4/4s to MDI interface cable , and a genuine apple 21 pin to lightening adapter cable - then this works ok .

Actually , scratch that ! - it appears than VW have finally released an MDI cable with the new apple lightening connector suitable for the iphone 5 / 5suklee wrote:Not yet - although it's apparently 'coming soon' ( and has been for a while....)

Re: Media In/ Aux In/ Aux Out Cable for iPhone 4s
if you decide to buy a lightening adaptor instead of a vw iPhone 5 cable make sure you don't buy the cable, before i got my roc i did a lot of digging about it and the general consensus was for some reason the cable doesn't work, only the tiny square plastic adapter

You mean the white (Apple) lightening adapter with about 6" of cable ? - thats exactly what i'm using currently (together with the VW MDI to iphone 4 lead) in my rocco .robb wrote:if you decide to buy a lightening adaptor instead of a vw iPhone 5 cable make sure you don't buy the cable, before i got my roc i did a lot of digging about it and the general consensus was for some reason the cable doesn't work, only the tiny square plastic adapter
It works perfectly

Re: Media In/ Aux In/ Aux Out Cable for iPhone 4s
Ah fair enough then sir ! I read on a couple of other vw forums a lot of people having issues with the cable adapter ( apple official) and everyone was advising to just buy the the lightening adapter without the cable, Altho I might look into this mdi to lightening cable as the previous owner of my car didn't leave the iPhone 4 cable in it so I'm currently using the one out of my dad's polo ( which he's never used in his 3 years of having the car but now I've got it is adamant he needs it ! )

Re: Media In/ Aux In/ Aux Out Cable for iPhone 4s
Essenwood - The Scirocco's in South Africa dont come with a MDI interface. As described above thee Aux in will only provide sound. You will need to control the music from the iPhone itself.
However VW does sell a retrofit kit for the MDI to enable the feature. When I installed mine it cost about R2500 which was about 2 years ago. I fitted it myself but I am sure the dealer can install for you.
The part no for the kit is
Module with extension cable and wiring loom: Part Number 5N0 057 342 (5N0057342)
You will also need a 30pin cable: Part Number 000 051 446 C (000051446C)
The kit fits in the side of the RCD-510 and cable comes out in the glovebox.
There is more information here including a copy of the instructions.

If you dont want to splice the wiring you can get a plug and play cable from Kufetec UK

I'm new to this forum and for some reason I have no privileges to start a post so I have to reply to existing posts.Essenwood wrote: The sump plug had been changed and not properly tightened. I wish that I could run my business in such a shoddy manner. Thank you again for your confirmatory advice.
I have overfilled my oil by a lot and I've read it can damage the car, So i just want to remove all oil and refill it.
Can anyone tell me where the sump plug is located and how easy a job this is?
