Help! Strange Metallic Rattling under acceleration

Post by Rocstar »

Hi all,

All of a sudden my 2.0ltr GT (TSI) has started making a horrible rattling from about 3k to 4k rpm! I've uploaded an audio track from my iPhone. It isn't great, it almost sounds electrical but it isn't. It only appears when the engine is under load, if the car is stood still and the throttle is blipped, the engine sounds fine.

Might need to play it with quicktime!

link doesnt work - says file is corrupt ?

the sound you describe is like 'pinking' (pre-ignition) are you sure that it isnt that ?

I believe it's something loose on the engine compartment, or under the windshield.

Is it only under acceleration.

Rocstar,

Have you done a search of the whole site? I had a rattling from my TDi when under load, and only at a certain rev range - it turned out to be the bonnet support rod flexing and banging on the bonnet and front of the engine bay. A bit of foam sorted that out.

Have a search !

Yeah, it's purely under acceleration. Seems to get worse the more miles I do. It's odd, very odd. It does sound like arcing on that audio clip but it's more of a regular creaking noise, not tappety. Hard to describe.

I did do a search yeah, but couldn't find anything other than one thread that sounded like it could be the same issue as mine however, no resolution was posted. I'm going to take a look under the bonnet and see if I can find anything. Failing that it's booked in on Monday. Not sure if I'm ready for the, "that's normal" comments as I'm likely to deck the technician and follow it up with, "yeah, so is that".
