2009 RNS 510 firmware update - how???

Post by hebroc »

Took my 09 Scirocco to the dealers today to have the jammed cd auto changer replaced (they did this under used car warranty - great, thanks...) and asked them to update the firmware on my RNS 510 satnav. It's still only working with 4 digit postcodes and of course the maps are well out of date. As far as I'm aware it's never been updated since it was installed. I'm the second owner (lovely Sumatra 2.0 TSi, truffle leather, panoramic roof etc - love it...).

But dealers told me that their 2013 VAGCOM wouldn't talk to my 09 RNS 510 so there's no way of updating the firmware (and so any maps I buy/get hold of will be incompatible).

This doesn't seem to square with things I've read on forums - but I don't know what step to take next. The satnav is fine but would be so much better if I could update...

Any advice?

Your in the same position as myself, I have an 09 car with the 5 digit postcode and would like to update it. I am contemplating updating the maps but not the firmware, clearly this won't resolve the postcode issue.

I have trawled various forums on this subject, but I am still not sure whether I want to risk a firmware update, I am concerned that something will go wrong and render the system useless ( and I am an IT engineer).

I think one of the firmware updates requires VCDS to recode the unit, and that is something I don't have. I am looking to get confirmation that just a map update can be done, but as they are quite expensive I want to be 100% certain before I commit.

I think as well the early model RNS 510 (model A) can only go up to a certain firmware rev.

It's not exactly straightforward this, not too mention expense. There are a few specialist firms that can do this work.

PM Metaljay, He seems pretty knowledgeable on the matter.

I updated mine from 5 digit no problems. You will need VCDS to put the Sat nav arrow back on the MFD though.

Thanks Tymondo for that, yes that is the thing, I don't have VCDS. As mentioned, I am happy not to have the full postcode input, but just need to find out if just a map update is good enough on its own.

I have emailed a Sat Nav specialist but they can't guarantee just a map update.

Cheers for your reply!

Hey guys,
I too have an 2009 RNS 510 in my Rocco and afaik the last stable fw update without having to recode is version 3980...that's what I have at the moment, I got it from my-gti.com, downloaded it on a double layer DVD and performed the update. It took about 40 minutes, works like a charm. Regarding the maps, I'm using V9 Western Europe (SVK, CZ, Hungary, Poland included) and that is too the latest available version with full postcodes for you in the UK, Points of interest, Speed limits, etc. Also downloadable from some websites for free.

The 3980 FW version includes voice control in addition to a bunch of things, my only hassle is that I don't have bluetooth installed in the car (previous owner took it away, still have the compartment under the seat ready for it) and my mics in the overhead console don't recognize any voice, though it's enabled in the RNS...I read that the mics are originally routed to the bluetooth and in order to use it to control the RNS by voice, I'd need to re-plug the cables or even use some harness...any workarounds on this?

That is very useful information janherko.

Yes -I gather the latest firmware is 5238, but clearly that will require a recode, and I am not even sure that you can take early versions of the RNS510 to that version. I am tempted therefore to update to 3980. I am not even sure what my current version is, as the 'secret menu' is hidden as I don't have VCDS to tell. I know it will be the version that was around early 2009 which is going on 5 years! :eyepop:

I am taking my time finding out the facts on this as anything that breaks is likely to be expensive!

Yup, my pleasure...
Since you can´t get to the secret menu by pressing and holding Setup on RNS, I´m guessing that you have probably 1... or 2... version of FW. And very correctly; I was also reluctant to try 5... version of FW, though available to download, as it could pretty easy be harmful to such earlier versions of RNS as we have...I´d say to easily stick with version 3980 without any worries about recoding and it´s proven to work...afaik, the 5238 version didn´t add any significant upgrades, maybe the RDS text at most...

The RNS510 pin assignments are here: http://www.my-gti.com/529/volkswagen-rn ... ssignments" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This might help you in locating which spot on the RNS510 the mic in and outs should be. You need to check how your mic is wired into the back of your RNS

Thank you very much guys for your replies on that one. Yes - I think I will do the 3980 firmware and get the map updated. I did have some dialogue from a car stereo specialist near me, and they also did not advise attempting to put the most recent version of the firmware onto early RNS units.

I think you are right Janherko, I probably have version 2 or something, it is annoying that I can't access the secret menu, and I don't want to take the unit out.

I did contact a SatNav specialist, but of course they would not comment on whether certain firmware's would be compatible or cause issues on units of different spec.

Many thanks again.

@hebroc - Yes - I am looking at using 3810a firmware. Take a look at http://www.rnsfirmware.com/rns510-firmw ... its-3810a/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have downloaded to my machine but not written it to CD yet. Still slightly nervous of this process with fear of it going wrong. I am not going to bother with 4xxx firmware on my unit though, that is where you need VCDS to recode the unit.

Morning guys,

Just to let you know... I was taking my extra brave pills last night and have successfully upgraded the firmware to 3180a without too many issues.

The biggest problem I had was getting the nav to actually to read the disc without throwing a CD/DVD Error. I eventually fixed this by using IMGBurn rather than Nero.

The guide and firmware I used is contained here on the Golf site

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index ... ic=23779.0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Be warned though - this does wipe your maps so you will need a map disc ready!

For those who want, here is the new Firmware 5238. Can be installed an all post C (included) version of the RNS510. https://mega.co.nz/#!BgsARQjS!Hj4gQQyGt ... IgPvrWF3g8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It also unlocks video in motion. One new feature included is Radio Text for FM radio. I advise to install on a DVD, for increased success.
