Hey guys, first thread on here although I've posted a few times. Great forum and some member's Sciroccos look seriously good!

I'm looking to pick up a secondhand rocco and I've noticed that models registered 2009 or before have the same steering wheel that's in my Mk4 facelift Polo (same in mk5 golfs I think, the fairly bland 3-spoke) whereas later models have the new shape wheel.

I was wondering if it was possible to retrofit a new shape wheel onto a pre 2009 car, how hard they would be to find and fit. Would the MFSW & airbag be plug and play? Common sense says yes but VW logic probably says no

Any other significant differences between the pre-09 and post-09 models?

Hi Ben,

Yes - early Scirocco's had a flat (or bland as you described) wheel. This was changed for the MY10, sore subject with me as they changed it just after I took delivery of my 09 plate, not that I have ever mentioned this on this forum ever!

Regarding changing the wheel, if it were me, I would not bother. It is not worth the hassle given that it obviously has an airbag in there, it would require recode via VCDS and would likely be expensive. I am not sure if all the controllers would be fully compatible between a MY10 steering wheel and the old 'red' MFD display on an 09/58 plate. definitely not worth the hassle.

Thanks for your reply Skippy. Can't believe I overlooked the airbag being different, those alone are so expensive you'd think they save your life or something..

Haha I call it bland because I've had the same style of wheel in front of me for four years already so much so that buying a new car with the same wheel almost wouldn't feel like a new car!

It is possible and not much of a hassle if you can find someone to install the parts needed.

Here's a pic of mine with the red MFD and the new wheel fitted.



P.S. My wheel has modified leather, the other one I have is new, without any modification.

Those suede grips must be hella comfy!

I'm guessing it took more than a spanner, a flat blade screwdriver and a steady hand to release the airbag and swap it over, probably new loom and control module as well?

Hmmm, I suspect there will be some cables/plugs missing as well if you had to retrofit a MFSW to your 09 'roc. When you take off the wheel, you have some cables that are only there for the MFSW option - not sure if your car will have the required plug to accept this cable I think.

Possibly, a new slip ring/control module too as you have mentioned. I see someone above has had it retrofitted though, interesting!

Edit: Actually, ignore some of the above, just remembered the MFSW wires go from the airbag to the wheel itself (D'oh!). So the main component to change (bar the wheel) would be the slip ring/controller.

I know this isn't specifically what you are after, but this guide compiled by UKLee on cruise retrofit, includes steps on removing and replacing the wheel

Awesome help, thanks for your replies! I think I'll just keep a beady out for a 10 plate - I figured if I found a really tidy pre-2010 for a good price I could factor in swapping the wheel, nevermind.

@Tweeter - How much was that wheel re-trim out of interest mate, it looks amazing!

If you look at the thread about retrofitting cruise control it will give you some idea about the process of removing the steering wheel. Not that difficult as long as you follow the airbag safety precautions.

I have done the same conversion on my 2009 car and can't get any buttons to work can you guide me through what needs changing apart from the steering wheel
