Poor running at low revs and from cold 2.0Tsi

Post by Baggers200 »

Hi All,
I recently purchased a 3 yr old 2.0Tsi GT at the beginning of last month. It has 40000mls on the clock, a FSH and a 1yr all component warranty.
On the day of picking it up I had a misfire, it has since gone into a dealer and they identified a misfire on cylinder 4. They couldnt replicate the fault again, so will not carry out any further work, they have however swapped the coil pack from cylinder 4 to 1, to see if its the coil pack if it occurs again.
The misfire hasnt happened again, but I do have issues with it running very lumpy and not wanting to rev smoothly when cold and it feels as if I need to pull the choke out (for those of you who remember them!!). Even when warm I am convinced it is holding back at lower revs and can be difficult driving it smoothly when in stop / start traffic, plus just the gentlest touch of the accelerator can make the revs flare up to 2000rpm, which could be why I am having some problems. I mentioned this when it was booked in and the technician took it home the day it was taken in to try replicate the misfire and he said everything was fine to him.
I have owned a turbo version Mini Cooper S and I dont remember having these issues with a forced induction engine when running at low revs and to be truthful I remember the Mini having more shove when putting your foot down.
Has anyone else had this problem or could this be a result of the misfire or is it just that Roccos dont like low speed running?? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as to be truthful it is ruining my love affair with the Rocco at the moment as I love the looks!!!

Could be a faulty inlet manifold. A few reports on cars of similar age /mileage/engine
Have a search and see if the symptoms match.

Thanks for the reply. Had a quick look on the forum and as you say it does sound similar, people who had the problem appear to have had their engine management light come on and the stuck inlet flap fault being diagnosed, whereas I'm not getting that. I am only getting mid 20's fuel consumption around town though, so it may still be a possiblity?! Thankfully I still have 11 months left on the warranty, but I will definately keep an eye on it.

Does anyone else have any ideas of what it could be?

I bought a second hand 09 200bhp tsi and did not notice anything wrong on test drive but then again it was completely new to me so no surprise. Anyway, had it a few months and I was getting concerned about it not running very smoothly, particularly at slower speeds with low reds and was finding it a bit of a beast to be honest. Anyway a couple of weeks later an engine light came on which referred me back to the dealers. It took a week or so for the dealers to book me in and by then the light had gone out. It was the inlet manifold flap thing and had to have a new inlet manifold fitted. Luckily I got 3 months warranty with the purchase at it was just before it had run out so did not cost me a penny. I think the previous owner probably knew there was a problem and traded it in when the light had gone out to get rid without having to pay £600+ for the new manifold. Once it was fixed the car has been running much more smoothly since so sounds like this could be your problem. My car was on about 32k at the time I think.
