Sound System Upgrade HELP

Post by mc-obesity »

Alright guys,

Ive been looking into upgrading the sound system in my car. I went to an audio shop the other day and for a decent system they quoted me £960 for the front 2 speakers and over £1000 for a sub to be built into the spare wheel compartment... Wayyy more than i was planning on spending..

Anyways Ive decided to just go with a sub in the boot for now (not one that fills the boot) as the speakers themselves are very clear when the bass is turned down. anyways this is what they have quoted me now:

Sub: Hertz EBX F25.5 = £269
Amp: Alpine MRX-M55 £229.00
Amp wiring kit £20.00
Labour £97.00

I have that feeling that im being ripped off? for one i know these products can be found cheaper on the internet... however my main issue is the Amp, would anyone be able to tell me if this amp is just total overkill or if its "recommended" It just doesn't seem right to me?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Have a read of my post.

I have an Alpine MRX -M100 which is overkill for sure. I think the MRX-M55 will be a perfect match for the Hertz Sub.

My MRX-100 is rated at Per Channel into 4ohms, 14.4V (≤1%THD+N): 600W
The MRX-55 is rated Per Channel into 4ohms, 14.4V (≤1%THD+N): 350W

The Hertz sub is 4 Ohms, 300 Watt continuous so the MRX-M55 Amp will have a bit of headroom, it will power the sub with ease. You could possibly save a few quid by going with a cheaper, less powerfull amplifier like the MRV-M250 but I think for small the difference in price the MRX is worth it.

The MRX series are digital so its good clean power.

They have quoted premium prices, as you say, it's all available online for less but then you have to get someone to install it if you can't do it yourself.

The Hertz sub and amp is going to sound awesome. Get them to connect the Amp signal to the rear speaker connections so then you can use the fader control on the stereo to turn the sub volume up and down using the fader. If you want less bass on a track fade to the front slightly and the sub volume decreases with the rear speakers.

I actually think the labour is a fair price, it's a good couple of hours to install, running the signal and power cables from the front to the back of the car takes some time.

Maybe point out the big difference in the online price and their quoted price and ask them if they are happy to install it for £97 if you supply the stuff sourced from online. I'm guessing they will give you a discount on the gear. Don't push too hard though, they need to make a living and their advice is worth something, setting up the amplifier crossover and gain for example.

For what it's worth I think adding a sub and amp is a much better upgrade than changing the original speakers (especially without adding another amp to power them).

Hi
Have to say that if someone really would install front speakers and routes powercord from the battery to the back of the car and makes good job without braking anything doing this... It is really cheap price for it (97£). I just have done this to my car and I have done these kind of "tuning" a lot during years and this is not the easiest car for this. Door panels are really tight fit and same goes to rest of the panels.

If really want to improve sound and make it easy and cheap, only add a subwoofer to the trunk. It really makes a difference to the sound when You have those low frequencies in use.
