170 or 140 bm

Post by deno 1 »

Hi people.
First post on your forum so go easy with me.
Im looking to buy a tdi...... but unsure of which model to go for??
Im not looking for rocket but have never driven the 140 or the 170.........my head says get the 140bm with the cheap road tax but after reading some posts on here it seems the 140 may be a bit under powered????
It seems the bm models are fairly new and cost a bit more than the equivalent 170 model.....
Any advise would be fantastic...

Also after looking at the extras on your cars on here im amazed that every car iv seen for sale have little to no extras on them at all........did you people buy new and spec your cars up....??

170. And that's from a 140 owner. 140 is a great car, but for the £90 pa saving I'd rather have the 170.

As a side, was there a reason VW didn't do bluemotion for the 170 scirocco? Seems like other cars in the range with the 170 lump have bluemotion :?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the new 177 tdi in sciroccos can come as bluemotion.

I have got a 2.0tsi and at the moment 140 bmt (for my company car)the bmt is an r-line with the 19" wheels, they are both great! if you aren't after a racing machine then the 140 will do fine! I do 1000 miles a week in my R-line, having had both the 140 & 170 models, for me and my driving the 140 will do. (On a private road) It sits at 95mph and returns 58mpg and gets there very well!

But whats for me may not be for you, so if its new your going for, test drive both and make your mind up that way? If its 2nd hand then go on price, spec and the deal that works. if you adamant that you will regret not buying a 170, then that's what you need!

On average a car is parked for 23hrs a day, i would rather wish I bought the car that is the right colour spec etc than just an engine, if you understand where i am going with that??

Hope that helps

Nick

For me the 170 is a good compromise between performance and economy.

I think i could get away with the 140 bm as the car would be used mainly by the mrs , however finding one with a few extras on it is impossible.....

Just returned a audi a1 tdi to the dealers with a full refund due to been ripped off and sold a pig........so a 140 would be a performance increase anyway.

That's why we ended up with a 140BMT - it's the Wife's during the week & mine at weekends (as I have a company car) :(
Cheap tax (£30 a year against £170 for the 1.4 Ibiza we had before) and a tank of diesel (£73 ish) lasts her all month (Ibiza about £130/mth on petrol for the same trips). Performance is still very impressive in my opinion - just come back from a 2500 mile trip around Europe and loved every minute in the Roc.
Not even out of it's depth on the autobahn - far from it actually! :D
As for extras, depends what you want - we had cruise & park sensors retrofitted and the GT has most of the other its you'd want.
Only regret is we couldn't find one with leather.
Good luck with your search but a 140BMT will not disappoint you (& you can always remap it when warranty runs out!).

This topic comes up over and over.

The only downside of a 170 over a 140 comes down to money.

If you can afford the slightly higher purchase price, slightly higher fuel costs, slightly higher insurance costs, slightly higher tax and slightly faster front tyre wear get a 170.

Other than higher costs there really isn't a downside. The upside is that its obviously faster, sounds better and can be mapped to a higher output than is achievable from a 140 if that's what you are into.

If you can afford a 170 get a 170, if you can't afford a 170, get a 140, it really is that simple.

You can still loose your licence with a 140 its not a slow car, it will keep pace or out perform most cars in its bracket :)

Could be worse, you could lose you licence, rather than just loosen it :)

Hi my first post on here, just swapped a MK5 golf 140 GTTDI for a 170 Scirocco and i recommend the 170 engine. The power delivery is very liner and smooth, its much better than the 140 golf version.

Interestingly I was driving a rental Passat CC DSG over the weekend. It was BMT but not sure of its TDI engine size.... hopefully 170 as it seemed rather quick (but then all rentals are...)

Update - looks like it was a 140 BMT, hmm.....
