I want to purchase the extras that allow me to use my phone through the car stereo (to make calls and read texts.)
What exactly is it that I require??
I don't want to head into VW clueless and end up paying over the odds.
Also, I'm about to upgrade my phone contract.... Considering the Galaxy S4, will there be any issues with this?
The iPhone 5 is also an option.
Would be good to know what car media/sat nav you have first, as that can help identify the right choice and what features you may be able to have.
If you're looking for phone modules, you the best two options are getting a VW official (9W7 module or similar) or a Fiscon bluetooth as a retrofit. I think VW themselves will also install the Bury kit, but its not as OEM and has an extra small screen that needs mounting somewhere (google all 3 for examples).
There are many companies that will do the retrofits, or a well known Poland based company that sell the official VW kits on eBay and the internet, but you'll need to install yourself and either fiscon or official VW kits will require VCDS coding to some extent.
Don't go for 'VW premium bluetooth' modules as they are often rSAP only, far better to get one that supports 'hands free profile' bluetooth. Also, I think only rSAP phones with a premium module will allow you to read texts, but I could be wrong.
As long as you get a kit that supports hands free profile, Galaxy or iPhone should work just fine.

I have the RNS510 and factory bluetooth and my iPhone 5 works perfectly. However, i cant stream music or plug it into the MDI to play music. It shows up on the RNS display but no sound comes out of the speakers!
Worth checking your RNS software version. Early revisions don't play nicely with A2DP, even though the audio comes through the same wires as the phone.
I think you'll find more recent software will fix it but not sure of exact revision number. Think it's 38xx off the top if my head
I think I remember someone saying they do - makes sense that the copy ones dont work, maybe they dont quite get the wiring right.
Have you tried the copy on say and iPod dock to see if it works? Might be worth a test on that 'cos I suspect the information is transmitted down the same channels. If it doesn't work on a dock, you know you definitely need to change the adapter
