Alfa GT (05) to Scirocco GT 140 BHP

Post by smbmetal »

Hi all,

First post, please be gentle :)

I'm thinking about changing to a Scirocco from my beloved Alfa GT JTD (150 BHP). I've had my Alfa for 5 years (I've heard all the jokes thanks!) and I was wondering if anyone on here has gone from an Alfa GT to a Scirocco and if so what are your thoughts?

I've not actually driven a Scirocco (yet) but feel nice an comfortable in one, was worried about banging my head. I've already found one (2011) at my local VW dealer but I don't think it hurts to gather people's thoughts from people that actually drive the cars first!

Thanks for any advice!

Si.

Not driven an Alfa to compare, but had my Roc for about 9months now and love it. I would say, if you can afford it, stretch your cash that wee bit extra for the 170bhp engine. Slightly less mpg, but better pull through all the gears.

There's loads of good advice on here. A good topic to check is this one http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... w+scirocco for info on things to keep an eye out for when buying.

Thank you useful link there. Will probably go for the 140 bhp one I think. I like the £30 tax :) £215 on my Alfa :(

Have never driven an alfa so cant help with that. but As said above If your budget can stretch that bit more definitely get the 170bhp you won't be disappointed. Some have even said the 170 has better mpg than the 140 :eyepop:

Only £30 tax if it's a newer Bluemotion model. If you are buying a second hand one, there are some (like mine) which is the 140 engine, but not Bluemotion so the tax is £120 (or thereabouts).

Worth making sure before buying. Even then, I wouldn't let £90 a year tax saving lead your decision. It's really not that much in the scheme of things or for the residuals.

And I'm pretty sure my tax is £120 a year for a 170bhp.

Yes it's a BlueMotion model in Rising Blue. I guess I could always have it re-mapped if I felt it was underpowered?

Yes, but the same can be said for the 170. Plus a remap will cost you ~£400. Unless this specific car has everything else you want spec wise or you're in a hurry to move, I'd keep on the look out for a good 170.

I would suggest you test drive the 140 and then test drive a 170. I'm sure that soon as you have drove a 170 you wouldn't look back at a 140. And a remapped 170 would be about 200+Bhp

Not a GT, but I went from a Brera JTS to a Scirocco 1.4TSI, IMHO the Brera had the looks but the Scirocco killed it in every other department, performance, economy, tyres, servicing, insurance, residuals, win/win situation, and believe me I love my Alfa's still got a Mito now, but the Scirocco is a great car.

SMBmetal: Speaking as someone who has owned both - get the 170! The 170 is a much better drive, for not much more money and has nigh-on the same economy. How much is a 140GT going to set you back? You'll probably spend just £500 more on the 170 on an 11 plate. I'm part-exing my 170TDI in on a new Golf MK7 GTD and was offered £15,500 for my June 2011 example with 19k miles on the clock, so I suspect the forecourt rate right now for a similar one is between £18-19k.

Are you from the Tyne/Wear area? I just ask because "SMB" means something up here (Newcastle) in footballing terms.
2013 - Tornado Red MK7 Golf GTD on order
2011-2013 - Rising Blue 170GT
2009-2011 - Pewter Roc 140GT
2007-2009 - Tornado Red Golf 170TDI GT
2005-2007 - Black Pearl Golf 140TDI GT
2003-2005 - Black Pearl Polo 1.9TDI

maisbitt: Another vote for the 170. My budget is max £17k. Will probably buy from a dealer I think, as I like the aftercare etc. Will still test drive both models though. I still love my Alfa GT but it's getting long in the tooth, it has been a great car though despite all the negative press Alfa's get. "SMB" is my initials and I'm from South Yorkshire. SWFC fan :)

I'd not let a £90ish pa saving put you off buying a 170 model. Last thing want to do is be driving round thinking "if only" as that will soon take the shine off your new purchase. (FTM) :D

A friend of mine went from an Alfa GT JTD to the Scirocco 140TDI (60 reg) and has been very happy with it, especially as everything still works!

He is 6ft and has plenty of room - no head banging issues. Quite happy with the 140 but admits to being a 'lazy' driver - not really looking for max power all the time.

I'm 6ft 2 and when I sat in one I was quite surprised how much room there was! On paper the Scirocco 140 is slightly quicker off the mark than my Alfa, so I'm sure the 140 will be fine. But as advised, I am going to probably try both the 140 and the 170. May have a look at my local dealer over the bank holiday weekend. Thay have a 140 and 170 in, although the 170 is a little older than what I'm looking for. I also want a 'rising blue' one! PS.....everything still works on my Alfa :)

Hi,

Just wanted to update my own thread. I've just picked a second-hand 170bhp Roc in Rising Blue with Supagard.

There was a BIG difference from the 140 to the 170. Both great cars though.

Thanks for everyone's advice!

Cheers!

Almost. I wanted parking sensors but there aren't many of those around in my area. I guess I'll see how I go and might look at getting some fitted.
