Well, it will soon be time to say goodbye....

Post by Sootchucker »

I guys, well yesterday in a fit of impulsiveness, I went ahead and ordered a new MK7 Golf GTD 5 Door DSG. As I'm 50 in June this year, it's an early birthday present for myself.

I wasn't really looking to swap out of the Rocco, but I was offered such a cracking deal I just couldn't say no. The funny thing is, I got quotes from 2 dealers (about 15 miles apart - they knew each other well), and despite me getting great deals from both, on the final day (yesterday) before signing, they were still fighting each other and lowering the price - yesterday alone, the price dropped by £550.00 ! :D

To be honest, I was pretty impressed by how much I got for the Rocco. I purchased her in Jan 2011 (took delivery in March 2011) and paid £24,700 (including options and after dealer discount - list was £26,780.00). My local dealer (who I purchased the Rocco from), has offered me £15,800.00 for the Rocco, which is not only nearly 63% retained value, but he will hold the part ex price until the Golf is delivered sometime in July or August.

Add to that £1850.00 discount off the GTD (nearly 6% off list), free 3 years servicing, free Gap and free Smart Paint repair (as well as an additional set of Rubber mats for the winter), made it a no brainer.

I think what really swung it was I actually ordered 2 cars, my GTD and for the wife a new Polo 3 Door Blue-GT DSG 1.4 ACT 140ps (with extras - Xenon's, Climate, Auto Wipers etc). To be honest the deal on that was even better, with £2,250.00 discount (as VW are contributing £1000 towards finance costs on Polo's at the moment if you use VW finance), and even her current 2011 Polo SEL has retained 56%, and this isn't even a "premium" car. Again, they are throwing in 3 years free servicing, GAP, smart repairs and I've persuaded them to supply front fogs lights, as for some strange reason in the UK, when you spec Xenon's on the Blue GT, you have to sacrifice fog-lights (however they are retained in other parts of Europe - strange) !

Anyway, I digress. I decided to swing for the nearly the full package on the GTD with extras of - Pure White Paint, Park Assist, Winter Pack, Discover Nav Pro (8"), Keyless Entry, Dynaudio Sound Package, Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) and lane assist (with heigh beam assist). The only options not selected were the 19" alloys (as I don't really like them that much, plus the ride will be harder and tyres more expensive to replace), Panoramic Sunroof (expensive at £900), and leather - Super expensive at £1,675.00 - which in my opinion just isn't worth it.

Will I be sorry to see the Rocco go, of course. It's a beautiful looking car (still after 6 years from launch), has been 100% faultlessly reliable (touch wood), and was my first DSG gearbox which I quickly fell in love with. There's not much about it I don't like except I still kick myself for not splashing out the extra and getting the 170ps model (for the very small dip in economy), and for not specifying Xenon's which I desperately wanted but couldn't afford at the time. That's why this time (with me now being in a better financial position), I wanted to spec the new car properly (and luckily Bi Xenon's with static cornering and LED DRL's are standard !)

Like I said you won't be getting rid of me quite yet as I don't expect to take delivery until July / August, (but can't wait), so I'll frequent the forums as usual, and will hopefully still be allowed back after the Rocco has gone ?

Cheers all.

So what was the price you got in the end for the Golf?

Just run your spec through 'Drive the Deal' and got £2,580 discount including a £500 discount for taking VW finance.

Drive The Deal Discounted Price: £28,994

I do like the new Golf. Great P/Ex on yours too.

Hi Sootchucker - thank you for a great write up on the Golf purchase. Its what I have my eye on too - but subject to what happens with the Scirocco updatws/Mk.4 over the next twelve months. I think the GTDis a really great package - the only fly in the ointment being the super expensive Pro sat-nav which you just have to have on a car at this level. If I were to spec one I think I would try to resist throwing too many options at it as (like yours) it takes it through the £30k barrier which to me is dumb-founding price for a Golf no matter how nice it is! For me it would be reverse camera and high-beam assist only (plus the sat-nav), which keeps it below 30k.

Drivethedeal is always the best benchmark new car prices but you have to consider disposing of your old car too. When I got my current Roc last December it was a great time of year to buy a car but a lousy time to sell but overall the trade-in deal suited me so I went ahead. The cheaper insurance and free servicing was welcome too.

We will be sorry to see you go but I suespect a few will be joining you on the GTD road!

I specced one of these yesterday on the VW site and topped £33k! It's got a good basic spec, but all throse wee extras do add up.

Great looking car and you know it'll drive well and due to scarcity retain the value better. Nice step up to the 185 engine from the 140 too. Got to get pictures up here when you get it!

Yeah, I know I could have got better form drive the deal or orange wheels but to be honest as this dealer is only ¾ mile away from where I live (so I can pop in any time), I was prepared to pay a little extra for the privilege. I paid about £1000 more than the brokers price, but like I said with free servicing, GAP and smart, the saving only equates to about £400-£500, so I was willing to pay that extra to deal with a local company, also the part ex price was super and about £800 more than any other dealer could muster, so an unknown quantity if the brokers part ex prices would have stood up the same scrutiny ?.

Appreciate some might not and will go with the absolutely cheapest price, but we are all different, and this dealer has looked after me well over the 6 years we have been buying VW's.

Also I should add that over on some of the MK7 Golf forums, it seems to be quite a common thing for Rocco owners to trade up to a new MK7 GTI or GTD, but then trashing the Rocco in the process.

Let's be quite clear her, yes I regret not getting a slightly better spec however I do absolutely love the Rocco and still think it's one of (if not the) prettiest cars in it's segment. As said, mine has been faultlessly reliable and TBH one of the reasons I'm getting rid is my age, and constant banging my head getting in and out (not as flexible as I used to be :D ), and a 5 door hatch will just suit me and my lifestyle better now than a 3 door Coupe.

I'm sure I'll be heartbroken when Rocco is driven away, but I hope the punch of 184 horses and 380NM of torque will help take my sadness away :)

I actually took my Drive the Deal quote to my local dealer and he beat it by £500 as like you, I wanted the localness to play a part in my decision (although I believe you specify where the car is to be delivered/prepped when you order the car so the end result would have been the same I suspect.)

I think however you have made a cracking choice in car - I've only had my Roc 4 months and already looking at the Mk7 Golf with envy - dammit, wish i'd waited lol

That's what I did I was armed with quotes from orangewheels. And they matched it. They also reduced the cost of gap insurance and offers 3 years servicing for £150..

I'm also looking at the gtd, great car and really good spec . tbh I wish I had waited aswell but I'm still more than happy with my roc. Apart from the huge doors getting in and out when someone is parked up next to me.

Yes mine are terrible. Was going to go to dealer and see what they say but doubt they would do anything. So might just buy new ones

Sounds just like the deal I did yesterday on a new Audi TT. Managed to get £18500 off the price after showing the dealer an Orangewheels quote which brought their price to within £600 of the on-line brokers price. But by the time you add in a couple of extras from the dealer and take account of the broker's fees and an extra £250 I'd have to pay for transported delivery, paying that little bit more to deal face to face with a local firm was worth it.
They valued my 1.4 160bhp Roc at £10,000 which at 3 years 9 months years old is very good. That's more than 50% value retained. Although they have allowed some depreciation over the possible 4 months delivery time it will still have retained over 45% of its value at 4 years old

Back at the end of February I was wishing I had gone for the Golf GTD, which was my first choice instead of the Roc. I honestly didn't even think about the Roc until the salesman pointed out my wife sitting in the display car. Now the reason for the regretting buying the Roc was the fact that I suffer from osteoarthritis of the whole of my spine and for almost a fortnight I was immobilised, only going out to get treatment. Getting in and out of the Roc was terrifying and extremely painful. Now I'm back on the road to recovery and the love affair with the Roc is igniting again, even though I'm still to rough to drive it. It's the first car I've had for many a year where I don't have to pull over to the side of the road when the arthritis attacks. The seats are superb.

I'll be in a position to change the Roc next year, but the wife absolutely loves it.
