R re-map choice

Post by snapey »

Afternoon all,

There's a good chance I'll be getting the R mapped within the next few months (still undecided between APR and Revo), however I'd just like to see what the general consensus is with R owner with regards to map their choice of map. I'm not out to start a war, just see what option folk have settled on.

Cheers, Luke

Afternoon Luke,

I have revo stage 2+ & all I can say is wow! I have also bought the sps switch so I can turn car back to stock & between stage 1, 2 & 2+, it also has a handy anti theft device which cuts the fuel supply off. Hope this helps.

Nick.

Cheers Nick,

I've already got a SPS from my MK5, although I never actually used it.

Seems pretty unanimous at the minute what most owners have gone for.

The revo map has been around longer plus revo have a more extensive dealer network hence most owners having gone down that route myself included, if I'd had a GIAC dealer nearby I'd have gone for that plus a DSG map.... Didn't fancy trying it without having dealer nearby to solve any "issues" that may have cropped up.

Whilst the APR map is receiving good reviews sadly my nearest dealer really isn't plus I've had a bad experience with that dealer before. A long (70 mile) drive to nearest APR dealer that has clue didn't appeal when the map appears to offer no benefits over REVO or GIAC.

dealer network is a very valid point from a support viewpoint, also finding a good dealer who understands the product

the offering from each tuner differs in terms of how it works in terms of handsets, switches and cruise etc and K04 maps have been revised recently by APR and Revo, i loved the revised Stage 1 Revo which a ran last year and the Stage 2 with linear throttle map which is much more clutch friendly on a manual car

personally i love the adjustably of SPS, i have two settings where one runs less boost for day to day, one for full on attack and i have also used it to adjust for poor quality fuel. used it this week as my wife's GTI Pirelli clutch is slipping after 67k miles, i've just lowered the boost so torque and power is reduced till its replaced but she still has more mid range

GIAC are also getting some good press of late

Cheers for the replies chaps.

Even though the car is DSG, linearity is still one of the biggest concerns that I have. It's all well a good having 300+ lb/ft of torque from 2k RPM, but I'm not running a Golf R and if I'm going to 'get on it' so to speak, i want to be working both the motor and box.

The car's going to be booked in with AKS once my dissertations out the way for TT wishbones and a decent geometry set up, so I may well take the plunge then rather than waiting for Inters. When I had the MK5 done there in 2011, they simply gave me a conservative map and sent me on my way, which I wasn't over the moon about, plus a coil pack let go on the M1 as well (fortunately I carry a spare in the boot even now).

Wigit, are you running the standard airbox on the Ed with the stage 2 file?

Luke I ran stock air box for about 8 months and ran really well i wanted to get first service outbthecway, I've had a Revo intake on for a couple of months which is darth vader like, was at Alex's this week and he reckons ITG is louder than Revo intake as he will be oing work on the mk5 and mk 6

I think the dsg in some respects manages the torque better than the manual

How much modding u looking to do Luke?

I'm planning on returning my car to stock for sale later this year but have no original bits left.

Can do a deal with you on intake / IC / exhaust / brakes if you're interested ?

Thats something else I really can't be dealing with. I ran a Twintake on the MK5 and it drove me mental after a few weeks.

I'm already running a full system and it's unlikely that the car will ever be tracked, so the brakes could be a bit overkill, but I'll certainly keep it in mind.

I went with Superchips Bluefin for a variety of reasons.

I've been using them since the early '90s and have been happy with their customer service.
They have been in motorsports for a long time and have vast experience

Whilst their tune is conservative this means a bigger margin for safety/reliability in our cars.

Having run a stage 1 tune for a year, I found out there was a newer tune with a sharper throttle response and I emailed them and they sent it over the next day. Made a great difference to the enjoyability of my car

I got that impression over the phone. I'm also contemplating having a few extra bits done at the same time, my treat after finally getting out of education after 23 years :)

How come GIAC isnt a clear choice?
GIAC is producing some kick ass files right now and having a lot of records. But normally i only see APR and Revo as the most common choice of tuning.

I'm not chasing numbers. Plus, I quite like the idea of a map written in the UK, using UK fuels and roads. There's also the fact that the nearest GIAC dealer is 70+ miles away.

Cheers for the input chaps.

Steve at Statllers is a top top tuner and the GIAC code is legendary with guys on the hunt for big power, especially big turbo conversions - they have a unique 500 + file for the TD05 turbos (internals required).
As Luke says - it's not always about the final numbers, but how the car feels and more to the point, drives...

Oh and the key is a serious performance exhaust :D

interesting comparison from an Ed30 running BF Stage 2, with some cracking spikes in torque and power below 4,000rpm from mk5golfgti.co.uk

interesting product development

GIAC just need to establish a dealer network but are doing some good work

when it comes to maps its not all about peak numbers, most reputable tuners having been doing work on K04 maps, others do not
